We took our first road trip in quite a while as we assembled at the John Wood Workforce Development Center on Koch's Lane. Newly named President Mike Elbe was on hand to introduce our speaker Pam Faust. Pam is the Dean of Career and technology at John Wood Community College. Pam mentioned that the Quincy area workforce is made up primarily in three fields with people working in the health field (19%), Manufacturing (17%) and Transportation and utilities (26%). All three are in need of employees, a need that JWCC is working to try and meet. One complication they are dealing with is parental mindset that their child needs to get a four year degree to be successful. After viewing a video, it was revealed that in many cases students are taking jobs not in the field of their schooling. Plus a quarter of the students enrolled at universities never finish with a degree for a variety of reasons. The solution is both education and technical training. That combination will lead to success. The perception that a four year degree will lead a person to financial success is no longer the case. While there, the members took a tour of the 3-D computer room. Jim Fuhrman, the Manufacturing & Training Coordinator, showed the Club how it all works. Then many went off to see the electrical and welding areas at the Workforce Center. It may be Quincy best kept secret which JWCC hopes to reveal for the betterment of the community. Thanks to Mike, Pam and Jim for their presentations

This & That

Mike Elbe presented the prayer to get the meeting underway. Art Awerkamp began the pledge as we all watched President Chuck Venvertloh struggle to hold the "massive" flag. He even changed hands to make it happen..

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and during the month the Quincy Exchange Club is asking for your support by purchasing "blue ribbons". These blue ribbons will be available for purchase at both Hy-Vee locations thru April 30th. So when you purchase your groceries this month, please purchase a blue ribbon to help prevent child abuse in our community.

Don't forget that the deadline to submit a candidate for this year's Golden Deeds Award is approaching. The Golden Deeds Award will be presented on May 9th

The Exchange Club Golf Outing will be held at Spring Lake Country Club on June 20th this year. You can also invite a prospective member to enjoy lunch and play that day.

Perry Terwelp gave us the update on Gus Macker, which is less than 6 weeks away. Perry passed out posters for the membership to display.

Steve Green needs our help with Macker. He is asking that we all step up and help keep score at the courts during Macker. This is not a difficult job but one that needs to be covered. Please sign up to be a scorekeeper. To find out more about what is involved call Steve at 653-1858.

The Dogwood parade is coming up on May 3rd and Dave Poland could use some help in passing out flags during the Parade. Please let Dave know that you will be available.

Despite a problem with the bus on the way to St. Louis, the 23rd Honor Flight was another huge success. Thanks to Carlos Fernandez for starting these wonderful trips a few years ago to Washington, D.C. for our veterans.

The pot for the 50-50 card draw will crawl above the $1000 mark when we get together again. There was no drawing last week unless the guys who showed up at Stoney Creek held one. They'll never admit it though.

President Chuck reminds everyone that dues are due. Please pay your 4th quarter dues if you haven't already.

Got your National Exchange Club Mega Raffle ticket yet? There is still time to enter the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle and there is still time to get in on the extended deadline for the Early Bird drawing which is now set for this Thursday. If you purchase a ticket for the Mega Raffle, the club will get $10 back. The grand prize winner, to be drawn on July 12th, 2014, will get $100,000 cash. Second prize is expected to reach $4000 cash and third prize is expected to reach $2500 cash. You can get your tickets today at www.exchangeraffle.com. You do not need to be a member to buy a ticket.

Good to see Bill Awerkamp back with us (second time this year)
