Aaron Kerkhoff, a sales coordinator for Kohl's Wholesale Company was our speaker. He is a former graduate of Quincy Notre Dame and Western Illinois University. This local company, owned by the Ehrhart family, is one of most successful food businesses in the Midwest.

Their service area basically covers Illinois (minus the Chicagoland area), all of Missouri and a good deal of Iowa. They are celebrating their 140th year in operation and started back in 1873 under the guidance of Nicholas Kohl, an immigrant from Germany. The company started as a coffee roasting company and is currently into their 6th generation of management.

Kohl's (and not the department store) employs 368 people and has never experienced a layoff in their long history. They currently have dry, refrigerated and frozen storage areas including the caves on Highway 57. They are also planning an expansion in Highway 57 in the near future.

Their success is evident by their statistics of having 25 consecutive years of growth and 15 consecutive years of growth over the previous year. They own 71 tractor trailers that travel an average of 14,000 miles a day in making over 600 daily delivery stops.

They are also very philanthropic in that the company has donated approximately a quarter-million dollars back to the community. Thanks to Mike Lavery for handling the introduction

This & That

The meeting began with Jim Benz presenting the prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Pledge was begun by Mike Llewellyn who pronounced the "I' to begin the pledge with what appeared to be a very "counselor-like" approach. Very calculated.

President Chuck Venvertloh reminded everyone that April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

In reminding everyone of how many weeks he has left as President, Chuck managed to place a "Vote for Chuck" sheet in front of the podium instead of "12 weeks". That was enough for our tail-twister, Rick Gengenbacher, to say "enough is enough" and fined Chuck appropriately.

Chuck mentioned we will be having a road trip this Friday but purposely didn't mention where in an effort to get people to read their bulletin. This was also a ploy  to get people to see if they will be greeters this Friday. The last two weeks we have not had greeters. If your name is selected to be a greeter please greet the membership at the meeting or find someone who will to replace you.

Chuck also reminded the membership to submit any candidates to receive the Golden Deeds Award on May 9th. Nominations end soon.

The Exchange Club Golf Outing will be held at Spring Lake Country Club on June 20th this year. Mark your calendars.

Steve Green updated us on Gus Macker. Steve thanked Carlos Fernandez of WGEM, David Adam of the Quincy Herald Whig and Jeff Dorsey of Y101 Radio for their assistance in interviewing Scott McNeal (Mr. Macker) last week. The interviews centered on getting the word out about registrations and also about the new registered officials.

Steve also passed out forms for members to sign up to be a scorekeeper during Macker. Please sign up to be a scorekeeper. To find out more about what is involved call Steve at 653-1858.

Dave Poland reminded the Club that we will be passing out flags during the Dogwood Parade on May 3rd. He will have more info in the weeks ahead.

As mentioned, Rick Gengenbacher handled the tail-twisting duties and did so with a "used" (ugh) rubber glove in reference to our previous meeting's topic. Funny stuff! Rick on a serious note complemented Carlos Fernandez and WGEM for holding the 23rd Honor Flight. Rick also reminded everyone that our Club was instrumental in getting the project off the ground (so to speak) as we donated money for the very first flight.

With the pot sitting at $983, Rich Howell licked his chops for the attempt to select the Ace of Spades. Rich drew a 5 of Spades instead so most likely we go over the one-thousand dollar mark this Friday in the 50-50 card draw. There are 21 cards left in the deck. In case you were unaware, it was Mike Lavery's idea of holding this event each week and a good one it was. Thanks again to Curt Moore for handling the card draw.

There is still time to enter the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. If you purchase a ticket for the Mega Raffle, the club will get $10 back. The grand prize winner, to be drawn on July 12th, 2014, will get $100,000 cash. Second prize is expected to reach $4000 cash and third prize is expected to reach $2500 cash. You can get your tickets today at www.exchangeraffle.com. You do not need to be a member to buy a ticket.

Congrats to Bill Stalder. For wearing his name badge, he was the winner of the $5 at the meeting last week.

This week's scheduled greeters are Jim Benz and Travis Brown. The same as the last two weeks.

Charlie Ledbetter gets the Joe Quinn "turn your damn phone off" Award for not only one but two separate ringing episodes. Who's next?

Get well wishes to Les Sachs who is recovering from knee surgery.

Countdown to Macker
Weeks

This week's featured Major Sponsor is Titan Wheel.

Titan has a heritage of over 100 years in the off-highway wheel manufacturing business. Titan is a leading global supplier of complete wheel and tire assemblies for off-highway vehicles. Titan's primary markets include agriculture, earthmoving/construction and consumer applications.

Titan traces its roots to the Electric Wheel Company in Quincy. Founded by John A. Stillwell and three associates, the company originally produced wheels for wagons and farm implements, later progressing into the manufacture of wagons, tractors and other implements.

In 1983, assets of the Electric Wheel facility were purchased by Titan Proform of Toronto, led by the late Canadian industrialist Joseph Tanenbaum and Maurice Taylor Jr., current Titan chairman and CEO. The new company was named Can-Am Industries. After Goodyear decided to exit the wheel and rim business, Can-Am installed the Goodyear equipment to manufacture "power adjust" wheels at the Quincy facility. In 1990, the company was renamed Titan Wheel International. During 1992, Tannenbaum sold his interest in the company to Taylor and MascoTech and went public in 1993.

In 1997, Titan reorganized its operations into separate wheel and tire groups, Titan Wheel Corporation and Titan Tire Corporation, to provide the framework for continued world-wide expansion in both sectors. The wheel and tire groups have individual presidents, while Taylor serves as chairman and CEO of the parent company. The corporate name was changed to Titan International, Inc.

During 2003, Titan's flagship wheel facility in Quincy, Illinois, expanded manufacturing capability in December when Titan Wheel Corporation of Iowa ceased wheel manufacturing in Walcott, Iowa. You can read Titan's entire history here.
