For a colon and rectal surgeon, Dr. Harsha Polavarapu could be a standup comedian as well. Dr. Harsha received his degree in India, his surgical training in London, his residency in Pennsylvania, fellowship in Orlando and board certification from the American Board of Surgery. He currently practices at Blessing Physicians Services. The actual colonoscopy test is painless and takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Patients are usually put under for the procedure and feel absolutely nothing. The preparation procedure isalso much better than it was in the past as well. The other good reason to take the test is that most insurance companies will cover a colonoscopy. Please guys, heed the Doctor's advice and take the test. Thanks to Eric Thomas for his introduction. Eric was even asked to pronounced Dr. Harsha's last name and under immense pressure he came through with flying colors. Butt (excuse the typo) then other than the good Doctor who would know any different.

In his presentation, he relayed that colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and it is preventable. In describing the process of the development of colon cancer, Dr. Harsha mentioned that your body creates new cells all the time. Those cells copy each other. When they don't copy correctly, the body has a way of removing them. That process slows down considerably after the age of 50 according to tests that have been conducted. This is why people need to have a colonoscopy at 50 and beyond.

If polyps are found early they can be removed before they become cancerous. People with colon cancer have a 90% survival rate if it is caught early. According to statistics, 7 of 10 people who develop polyps have no symptoms. One way to prevent polyps from forming on the intestine wall is to eat more fiber and less red meat.

Macker Man Cometh

Scott McNeal, Mr. Gus Macker, was also with us Friday. For those who don't know the story, Scott started Gus Macker back in the 1970's in his hometown of Belding, Michigan. He set up a basketball tournament in his driveway with 18 players each paying one dollar to play. The eventual winner got the $18 bucks and the rest is history. Mike Lavery heard about Macker and went to visit one in Decatur, Illinois (I believe) and proposed that the Club do one here. That was 24 years ago.

Scott announced that this year's Gus Macker in Quincy will feature for the first time registered referees as Gus Busters. The third place teams will also receive medals instead of trophies and all awards will have the name Quincy on them. Gus Macker is set for May 24 and 25 in Quincy.

Remember that April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Jared Haugh handled the prayer with Vic Welper mildly stating "I' to begin the Pledge of Allegiance. I have to believe Vic said "I' much more forcefully at his wedding followed by "do". I'll have to ask Mrs. Welper.

Speaking of Mr. Welper, he announced that Josh Klitz has agreed to assist Vic and Cory Watson on the Macker sponsorship committee. Apparently, that committee had their quota of sponsorships raised at the last Macker meeting. So please contact Vic and his crew to see how you can help make that happen.

President Chuck Venvertloh was presented a Gus Macker basketball by Scott McNeal. In return, Scott was given a "Vote for Chuck" t-shirt. My God, is it ever going to end?

Chuck mentioned we will be having a road trip on April 11th as we will meet at the John Wood Development Center at 4220 Koch's Lane (for the uninitiated, this is not where Dennis Koch lives)

Kent Anderson enlightened the Club on the Kansas City BBQ Association's BBQ school. This year's school to be accredited for our Smoke on the River event will be held on Saturday, August 2nd. More details in the weeks ahead.

Dick Wentura, dipping into his grandkids inheritance, bought $10 worth of tickets and was lucky enough for the second week in a row to have the correct ticket for the 50-50 Card Draw. Dick selected the Queen of Diamonds so the pot escalates to beyond $937 this Friday. Thanks again to Curt Moore for handling the card draw.

Jared Haugh conducted the tail twisting duties and chose one table to deposit a handful of rubber gloves in front of Les Sachs. It was a perfect prop for our speaker. But where did he get them? Maybe we don't want to know.

The Club purchased a $100 ticket for one lucky member to enter the National Exchange Club's Mega Raffle. That lucky person was Dr. Lenny Biallas who had his name drawn. If you purchase a ticket for the National Exchange Club Mega Raffle, the club will get $10 back. The grand prize winner, to be drawn on July 12th, 2014, will get $100,000 cash. Second prize is expected to reach $4000 cash and third prize is expected to reach $2500 cash. You can get your tickets today at www.exchangeraffle.com. You do not need to be a member to buy a ticket.

Congrats to Jim Lierly. For wearing his name badge, he was the winner of the $5 at the meeting last week.

This week's scheduled greeters are Jim Benz and Travis Brown. The same as last week. Thanks to Charlie Ledbetter for stepping up and handling the membership as they came in.
