Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

One of the most important meetings we will have all year will be held this Friday as our guest will be Dr. Harsha Polavaropu who will be discussing colorectal cancer awareness. Not that it has anything to do with basketball, but Mr. Gus Macker himself, Scott McNeal, will also be joining us. Anyone who can pronounce the doctor's last name gets to do the introduction. So join us for a double dose of Quincy's finest hour and bring a guest!

Athletic Director, Tommy Bell of Western Illinois University in Macomb was our guest last Friday. Mr. Bell updated us on the latest sporting activities at WIU. Mr. Bell became the new Athletic Director in 2013 coming to Macomb from Indiana-Purdue Fort Worth and is extremely pleased with the 20 athletic programs on hand in Macomb. He especially has high hopes for the football program which has been in existence for 110 years. Western also has more NFL players than any other Illinois university. 55% of the student athletes have a grade point average of 3.0 or better and cumulatively they have over 2400 community service hours and have given over $7500 back to the Macomb community.

Some of the new things on the horizon at Western include the enhancement of the west side of the football stadium with new buildings planned for that area. Plus, Western Hall will be getting a new basketball floor and with it a new seating plan

During his talk, Mr. Bell announced that Quincy native and WIU student athlete Jimmy Holtschlag has won the Post Graduate Award and the $7,500 grant that goes with it. Jimmy's father, Dr. Mark Holtschlag, and WIU's Patrick Osterman were also in attendance for the announcement. Thanks to Dan Brink who handled the introduction.

This & That

Mike Elbe presented the prayer with reference to basketball being played in the area. He also mentioned a call for prayers for J.D. Venvertloh, the son of former member Dale Venvertloh who is suffering with his health.

Josh Klitz began the Pledge of Allegiance with confidence and the rest of us helped him after that.

President Chuck Venvertloh congratulated Randy Frese, Mike, McLaughlin and himself for winning elections last week. It says quite a bit about the quality of our club members. Chuck still displayed a 'Vote for Chuck" sign asking if the sign was art or not in reference to a previous Club meeting.

Chuck mentioned a thank you from Junior Achievement for a $100 donation the Club made to them.

He also mentioned that the Quincy Community Theatre is offering a 15% discount on tickets to Exchangites for their play entitled "The Putnam County Spelling Bee".

We had a second reading for Tim Weis of Quincy University to become a new member. The Club voted yes so bring him in. He is being sponsored by Steve Green.

Vic Welper talked about court sponsorships for the upcoming Gus Macker Basketball Tournament. It is vital that we get these courts sold and wrapped up quickly. Vic and Cory Watson are handling this part of Macker for us.

Cullan Duke updated everyone on the Golden Deeds meeting coming up in May. Nominations are being accepted now.

Jeff Dorsey presented "The News" in a way that no one else presents it in this area thanks to the late John Tripp. The news also featured sports and weather this time. All news, weather and sports stays with us because I don't want any lawyers contacting me if you know what I mean.

Dick Wentura, purchasing $10 worth of tickets was lucky enough to have one of them selected so he could draw a card for the 50-50 card draw. With the pot at $900, Dick was trying to get his already spent $900 back, but drew the Jack of Spades. So the pot grows closer to $1,000. Expect to see some long time lost members return to the fold in the weeks ahead. Thanks to Curt Moore for handling the card draw.

Jeff Dorsey conducted the tail twisting duties as well and featured a joke about a guy who joined the Army 50 years ago. Had to be there.

If you want in on the first early bird drawing for the National Exchange Club Mega Raffle you will need to purchase a ticket for $100 before March 31st. For every ticket we sell the club will get $10 back. The grand prize winner, to be drawn on July 12th, 2014, will get $100,000 cash. Second prize is expected to reach $4,000 cash and third prize is expected to reach $2,500 cash. You can get your tickets today at www.exchangeraffle.com. You do not need to be a member to buy a ticket.

Congrats to Doug Greenwell who was named to the Country Financial All-America Team. Doug is an 11 time qualifier for this honor.

Rick Veihl was the winner of the $5 for wearing his badge at the meeting last week.

This week's scheduled greeters are Jim Benz and Travis Brown
