This Friday

WIUWe have the pleasure of hearing from Tommy Bell, the Athletic Director of Western Illinois University in Macomb. Mr. Bell will update us on the latest sporting activities at WIU. It is another good meeting to bring a guest. Thanks to Dan Brink who will handle the introduction. Plus the news, postponed from last week, will be presented.

Amy Looten, the Executive Director of the Quincy Chamber of Co mmerce, enlightened us on the activities of the Chamber to enhance the business climate for the Quincy area. Amy has been a tireless worker for the Chamber's membership and has been a voice representing the businesses for years. A former worker in public relations for St. Mary's Hospital and for Culver-Stockton, Amy has held the Executive Director's position for the Chamber of Commerce locally since 2002. She began her talk by jokingly thanking the "He Man Woman's Hater's Club" for inviting her to speak. She mentioned that the Chamber is there to preserve, protect and serve businesses in the community. They currently have 651 members. Amy then proceeded to conduct a Chamber local business quiz for the Exchangites to participate in. It turned out to be informative and quite entertaining as well.
Student of the Month

Kristen Gengenbacher

We held our final Student of the Month and it was one of our own member's daughter who was the recipient. Kristen Gengenbacher of Quincy Notre Dame was this month's winner. Kristen, the daughter of Rick and Becky Gengenbacher, is second overall in her class at QND with a grade point average of 4.11 and scored a 29 on her ACT. She is on the Honor Roll and a member of the National Honor Society. Kristen has been a 3-sport participant playing volleyball, basketball and softball for QND winning 3 State titles and a third place medal during her career in basketball. She volunteers at the Salvation Army, the Adams County Red Cross, and the Illinois Veteran's Home. She has over 100 service hours, some 60+ hours over the requirement at QND. Kristen has received a volleyball scholarship from the University of San Diego and will be attending school in Southern California this fall. Mark McDowell, Principal at Quincy Notre Dame, handled the introduction. A big thanks to John Johannes for organizing the Students of the Month programs.

This & That

John Spring had the honors of saying the prayer thanking God for all the great basketball played this winter, for the great weather for the     St. Patrick's Parade and for our great food provided by JJ's Café..

Eric Thomas was asked to initial the Pledge of Allegiance. In one of the softest utterances of the work "I" (I really think he went to his keyboard and typed "I'" instead), the club followed albeit not in unison. We did finish strong though.

Bruce Broemmel handled the tail twisting duties with authority fining some people along the way for their comments.

President Chuck Venvertloh thanked Curt Moore for running the show last week in his absence. Chuck managed to mention the primary and even displayed his opponents on the front table (see picture).

Chuck also congratulated the area schools for their fine season in basketball and even mentioned that the Gengenbacher clan could suit up and play in the N.I.T.

Chuck mentioned the Board's decision to donate $500 to the Boy Scout's Eagle Scout Recognition dinner, $300 to sponsor a Girl Scout membership, $250 for the Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Pool, and $150 for a hole sponsorship for the John Wood Community College golf outing.

We had a first reading for Tim Weise to become a new member. He is being sponsored by Steve Green.

Steve Green also updated the club on where things stand with Gus Macker for this year. Mike Lavery announced that we have been successful in keeping our major sponsors from last year in Titan Wheel, Refreshment Services Pepsi, Quincy Medical Group, WGEM, and the Quincy Herald Whig. We are still looking for others so if you have any leads let Mike know. Per Perry Terwelp, this year's food sponsors will be Hy-Vee, The Maine Course and Riverside Smokehouse. Gengenbacher Ice will also return. Steve Green also announced that Quincy Mack will continue to sponsor the Dream Court.

Rick Gengenbacher told the Club that we will be using registered officials this year instead of inexperienced Gus Busters. It was also announced that the Club will need to step up and serve as scorekeepers for this year's event. More on Macker coming in the weeks ahead.

The 50-50 card drawing was worth $861 and Jeff Dorsey (luck-o-the Irish) had the winning ticket but drew a 2 of diamonds so the pot will grow next week.

Make sure to purchase your National Exchange Club Mega Raffle ticket. For every ticket we sell the club will get $10 back. The cost is $100 per ticket. The winner, to be drawn on July 12th, 2014, will get $100,000 cash. Second prize is expected to reach $4000 cash and third prize is expected to reach $2500 cash. Greg Feldberg was the guest of Chris Parker. Greg is a prospective member.

Dennis Koch was the winner of the $5 for wearing his badge at the meeting last week.

Line of the Week

Belongs to Mel Dillman after a comment from Chuck Venvertloh. Chuck Venvertloh reminded the Club to not to forget to exercise your right to vote, because for some of you it will be the only exercise you will get. That was followed by Mel Dillman's comment

 - "That maybe the only vote you get"
