Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

Quincy Mayor Kyle Moore will be our speaker as he presents his first State of the City address. Plenty to discuss in his first year as mayor - good and, well, not so much. Tight budgets, garbage collection, snow removal and hyro-electric power have been hot topics this year - see what's on tap for the coming year. We are anticipating a large crowd so you might come early!

The membership, including your humble reporter, got the privilege of sampling wine for lunch complements of our speaker Jeremy Wombles of Hopewell Winery. Four doughes whoo dunt no, I rite this bulletin write avter da meatin. Dat vine whas pretty guud.

Jeremy and his wife, Lisa who was in attendance, opened Hopewell Winery in 2006 after being childhood sweethearts at Pleasant Hill High School and attending college at SIU-Carbondale. Jeremy received his Masters Degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois-Springfield.

Hopewell Winery is located on Highway 54 near Sumer Hill, Illinois just east of Atlas, Illinois. Jeremy is working with area distributors to get his wines marketed around the area and recently captured the Most Favorite Wine Award for his "Bob White Wine" in voting conducted by the Quincy Visitors and Convention Bureau. His current marketing attempt is to try and break into the St. Louis market.

Hopewell Winery does not have its own vineyard so they purchase their grapes for their wine making. Jeremy also revealed some interesting statistics in that there are some 20 different types of grapes that are grown and that of all the alcohol consumed in Chicago, 30% of it is wine. Hopewell is also one of over 100 wineries in the state of Illinois. Thanks to Curt Moore for handling the introduction.

This & That

John Spring took his assignment of presenting the prayer seriously in a prayer that included a wish for improving weather.

Mike McLaughlin had the honors of saying the initial word of the Pledge of Allegiance and the membership followed it like little sheep to its completion. Everyone seemed to remember the words too.

Bruce Broemmel handled the tail twisting duties and threw in a resurrection joke to boot.

President Chuck Venvertloh wasted no time to mention his candidacy for Adams County Clerk which prompted every table to hold up his opponents signs in response. This occurred several times throughout the meeting when reference to the campaign was made.

Chuck also mentioned the National Exchange Club Mega Raffle which began last Saturday. If you are not familiar with it here are some details - the Mega Raffle has a grand prize of $100,000 and 27 other prizes totalling another $35,000. Early bird drawings will be held the end of March, ($1,000), April ($2,500) and May ($5,000), with the gran prize drawing held at the National Convention in July. Tickets are $100 each and you don't have to be an Exchangite or be present to win. Any ticket purchased around here will net the club $10 each. Tickets are available online at www.exchangeraffle.com. Dennis will have all the details.

Special guests in attendance were soon to be 21 Alex Selby, son of Dan Selby and former member Kevin Curran, now a member of the Naperville Exchange Club, a guest of Kirk Frageman.

Elvin Townsend won the $5 for wearing his badge at the meeting.

This week's scheduled greeters are Vic Welper and Doug Reed

Rick Veihl held the winning ticket but drew a 5 of Hearts. So the pot of $755 will grow even more for this Friday's drawing. Thanks to Curt Moore for handling the 50-50 drawing.

Congratulations to one of our own as Mike Elbe was named the next President of John Wood Community College to replace the retiring John Letts. Way to go Mike. We are all proud and happy for you. Mike was even mentioned in the opening prayer as well.

On a sad note, Past Exchange Club President Henry Wiegmann (1992-1993) passed away on Saturday, February 22. You can read Henry's obituary here.
