Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

It is our annual Hot Stove Meeting. One of, if not the best, meetRick Hummel  ing of the year as we get the opportunity to visit with Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post Dispatch and longtime beat writer for the St. Louis Cardinals. Rick, a graduate of Quincy Senior High, has been a frequent guest on many sports talk shows around the country including ESPN. Rick's latest book about Tony LaRussa, called "One Last Strike", is one any sports fan needs to have in his or her library. Cardinal broadcaster Mike Shannon is also planning on being in attendance as well. If you are planning on bringing a guest, please let house chair Mel Dillman know. Might want to get there early for this won (Freudian slip).

It was the basketball coaches week as Brad Hoyt of John Wood Community College, Marty Bell of Quincy University and Sean Taylor of Quincy High School reviewed their current seasons. Following their talks they took questions from the membership about their seasons and programs. Bob Sheffield of QND will join us at a later date. A big thanks to Ben Marth of WGEM for serving as MC of the program.

We also had the opportunity to present our Student of the Month award to Mitchell Johannes of Quincy Notre Dame High School. Mitchell is the son of one of our own, John Johannes and his wife Kim. The proud father introduced QND Principal Mark McDowell, but not before scoring points with his wife by saying his son got all his intelligence from his mother. Mitchell will go far in life based simply on his Principal's comments about him as well as his acceptance comments. One could tell he is well on his way to good things in life. Kim and John should be very proud of his accomplishments already.

In a completely filled agenda for our meeting, we also held the first of two installments of the Character Champions awards presentations. Jim Benz explained the background of the awards with these awards dealing with sports activities in the fall of last year. The honorees were all presented a beautiful plaque by Jeff Dorsey.

The winners were:

Dwyer Kelly, a senior from Southeastern High School (Parents: Mark and Lisa Kelly) and Lauren Glick, an 8th grader from Southeastern Jr. High (Parents: Lane and Christy Glick). They were introduced by Todd Fox, Principal and coach at Southeastern High School.

From Central High School, Erin Flesner a senior (Parents: John and Mary Kay Flesner) and Hayden Neisen of Central Jr. High (Parents: Dion and Shelly Neisen). They were introduced by Athletic Director Matt Long.

Representing Quincy Notre Dame High School was Shelby Ulrich a senior (Parents: Randy and Nancy Ulrich. Eric Orne, Assistant Athletic Director at QND handled her introduction.

And from Mendon Unity High School, Alex Blickhan a senior (Parents: Susan and David Blickhan). Athletic Director Christina Meyer presented the introduction.

Thanks to Jim Benz, Kirk Frageman and Bill Stalder for their work on this event (hope I didn't forget anyone else).

This & That

Jared Haugh initiated the meeting with a prayer for all to contemplate. He was followed by a Kelly Stupasky "I" to begin the Pledge of Allegiance.Jared Haugh fleeced the flock as tail-twister. In doing so to speed things up he asked for everyone at their table to pass their buck to the ugliest person there for collection. That went over well. Plenty of laughs and confusion followed.

While I was fixing our microphone problem, guests were introduced. Not sure this is right, but I believe I heard that Kelly brought Steve Iverson with him and Bing Welper was the guest of Vic Welper.

Nice turnout for our Exchange Club New Member mixer at Martini's 515, the site of the infamous Skip/Dorsey night out and memorable rides home.

President Chuck Venvertloh again shamelessly plugged his run for office (Adams County Clerk....you owe me Chuck for including this).

Chuck mentioned we received a letter of thanks from Transitions for the Club's donation to purchase an automatic door at their facility for their residents to utilize.

We had a first reading for prospective new member, Randy Dickens (retired from the Quincy Public School System). Randy is being proposed for membership by Jeff Dorsey.

The 50-50 card draw, worth $580 was held by Curt Moore with Dan Brink holding the correct ticket. Dan drew a 4 of Spades so the pot will grow. Again, for the new members the drawing of the Ace of Spades will win you the entire winners pot ($580 right now). There is actually $1,160 in the pot with the club getting the other half of that. If you draw a joker, you win $5 and get to draw again and if you have the correct number to draw a card you automatically win $5.

Goes to Jeff Dorsey (I had to leave early so I am sure there were others that would have qualified). After one of the recipients of the Character Champions awards had trouble responding to the membership after accepting the award, Dorsey responded,

 - "don't worry about it, I also struggle with a lack of words sometimes"
