The President of the Quincy School Board, Stephanie Erwin, was our special guest as she presented the positives and the challenges facing the Public School System. The program began with a video featuring the wonderful activities that the students in various grades have been involved in that few hear anything about. The Public School District #172 has seen many changes in a year including the addition of a new Superintendent in Steven Cobb, plus numerous new administrative and teaching staff members. There are 7000 students and 1500 staff members making the school district the 2nd largest employer in Quincy with a budget of $70-million.

Some of the issues the district is tackling are the possibility of new school buildings being built, drug testing of students and refining the new uniform discipline policy. Currently, board members are assigned a school each month to be a part of which rotates monthly so all members actually are aware of the building's limitations. Along with that, this year marked a change of school board meeting sites. Each board meeting is being held at a different school instead of just the Round Room at Baldwin School as has been the case in the past.

Student of the Month
Terra Scranton

Also as part of the Exchange Club's Friday meeting the 3rd Student of the Month Award was presented to Terra Scranton of Quincy Senior High School. Terra is ranked 2nd in her class of 487 students with a grade point average of 4.5476 (which is the cumulative GPA of the entire Exchange Club membership). Terra is a member of the National honor Society, the Beta Club, Key Club, and All School Student Council. Not only is she a member of every service group that the school offers but she holds a leadership role in all of them. In her spare time she volunteers as a tutor for Baldwin students and is a part of the Big Brother-Big Sister Program.

Terra plans of furthering her education at the University of Chicago, Washington University, Princeton University, the University of Iowa, or the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. I have had the privilege of driving past three of those schools for what that's worth. John Johannes introduced Mike Llewellyn who had the honors of presenting Terra the award. Terra's parents, Pam Thurman and Robert Scranton were in attendance to watch the presentation along with Terra's boyfriend Thomas Cox.

This & That

Jared Haugh began the meeting with our prayer and it was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Chris Scarano

For the second week in a row, Dr. Lenny Biallas held the winning ticket. And for the second week in a row, Lenny drew the wrong card (6 of Spades) so the pot of $370 goes up even more this Friday. Keep it up Lenny, you're gonna make somebody wealthy.

President Chuck Venvertloh thanked all who carried the flag in the Veteran's Parade including Rick Veihl who walked the entire route with cane in hand 6 days after hip surgery.

Chuck also mentioned the involvement Exchangites Chris Scarano, was the featured speaker, and Jeff Dorsey, who was the Master of Ceremonies for the Veteran's Day Ceremony at the Illinois Veteran's Home. That event was organized by fellow Exchangite Rick Gengenbacher.

Chuck also received a thank you letter on behalf of the Club from Patty Adam thanking us for our donation to the recent Birthright Trivia Night.

A new membership ceremony was placed on hold as we await the new member, Josh Klitz's arrival. Hopefully, next week. We did have a first reading on a prospective new member James Johnson, proposed by Bob Hays. James is a Chiropractor who works for Irvine Chiropractic. A 2nd reading will be held next week.

Dennis Koch reminded everyone of the December 14th date for the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament at QHS gymnasium. He mentioned that signup sheets will be on tables beginning this Friday. Please sign up to help this wonderful event.

Chris Scarano mentioned the partnership of the Fishing For Freedom event with the Exchange Club. The event will feature a fish fry on Friday, June 6th, a banquet on Saturday, June 7th and the fishing event on Sunday, June 8th. Chris mentioned that over 900 people attended the banquet and 140 Wounded Warriors fished last year.

We had several guests at last Friday's meeting including Dean LaVelle (guest of Travis Brown), Dave Ulrich and Glen Sanders (guests of Chris Scarano), Jerry Stone (guest of Sonny Christner) and Terry Myers (guest of our speaker Stephanie Erwin).

Good to see Eric Schultz back with us as he recovers from recent hernia surgery. I told him not to pick up the Big Dog's tab at Kelly's but he wouldn't listen

Line of the Week

Belongs to Jared Haugh who, after giving up the floor to Elvin Townsend who proceeded to tell what was supposed to be a funny story that no one got, looked him right in the eye and said

 - "try again next week".
