2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

Please come early this Friday as we hold the Firefighter of the Year Award luncheon. This has always been a well attended event and it is expected to be that way again. Bring a guest or prospective member and enjoy Quincy's finest hour this week and help us recognize our firefighter of the year!

The Early Tin Dusters Color Run 2013, held last weekend, was the topic and Becky Albert was our speaker. Becky mentioned that the Early Tin Duster Club was formed in 1976 and the Color Run (actually named the "Road Tour" then) began in Quincy in 1981 with just 35 cars involved. The goal of the 2013 Color Run was to have 1000 pre-1949 street rods at this year's event. As of this writing it was unknown as to how many made it to Quincy. Last year's total was nearly 950 with cars coming from as far away as Alaska and Florida for the event. Becky mentioned that the average value of these street rods is around $30,000 each and this event brings in between 800-thousand and $1-million dollars to the community. There were plenty of events durin g their stay including a wine tour, home tours, a poker run, and a flag presentation. There were plenty of raffles held as well and over the years the Early Tin Duster's Car Club has donated nearly $160-thousand to Camp Callahan. If you weren't there you missed another good program which also featured theme music and a continuous slide show of street rods plus an introduction by the one armed, slinged Curt Moore.

Youth of the Month
Heather Griswold

The E xchange Club also awarded Heather Griswold of Quincy Notre Dame High School the Student of the Month honors. Heather is currently ranked 5th in her class and has earned a very impressive composite score of 30 on her ACT exam and has a weighted Grade Point Average of 4.046 on a 4.0 scale. Heather is also involved in many school and outside activities and has accumulated 177 Community Service hours when only 30 hours are required. Her plans are to attend Maryville, Bradley or Drake University and go on to Medical School from there. Her proud mother, Melissa Griswold and her Principal Mark McDowell were also in attendance for the award presentation. Thanks to Dr. Lenny Biallas who handled the presentation and John Johannes who handled the logistics of the presentation (that means he set everything up for those who never had a 4.046 GPA).

This & That

John Spring reached out to God for us with the prayer that featured a request for a St. Louis Cardinal win.

Hal Broadwater initiated (that means started for those with a GPA of 1.0) the Pledge of Allegiance.

Rick Gengenbacher was our tail twister and methodically went around the room featuring several comments including a complement on the good looks of Melissa, Heather Griswold's mother. The man was wound up for sure. Perhaps he was worried that the State of Illinois might shut down like the Feds did.

Rick Goughnour handled the card draw for the "ailing" Curt Moore and Hal Broadwater had the winning ticket but drew a King of Spades. So the pot of $297 goes higher next week.

One guest this week and it was a prospective member as Bob Hays brought Dr. Jay Johnson from Irvine Chiropractic with him to the meeting. Bob seems to be walking better too!

President Chuck Venvertloh presented Mike Elbe his 12 pack of beer for bringing in a new member. I have lost count but that might be 4 cases now so far.

Chuck also asked for someone to step up and chair "Smoke" (as he put it) for next year. He was referring to Smoke on the River. If interested contact Chuck as soon as possible.

The Club also made a $500 donation to Toys for Tots and received a thank you for the Shade White Autism organization for our donation to that cause as well.

We held a first reading for membership for Josh Klitz of Sisco Foods. Josh is being proposed for membership by Steve Labs.

Dennis Koch addressed the group notifying us that his proposal at the National Leadership Conference in Detroit was accepted and the National Exchange Club will be holding a Mega Raffle whereby 10% of the $100 ticket sale will be returned to the local Exchange Club. That's $10 for those of you who went to public school.

The Annual Lincolnland Conference will be held on November 9th in Bloomington, Illinois. If interested in going, please contact Joel Koch. The Club will pick up your expenses if you would like to attend.

Doug Greenwell thanked those few of you who returned your surveys. Vital information has been gathered from the few who actually took the 5 minutes to fill them out. Thanks to those who did.

One has to wonder if Principal Mark McDowell will ever come back with another student of the month as during this one meeting we had gambling (card draw), a 12 pack of beer awarded and a reference to "Smoke". He even jokingly made reference to this.

Line of the Week

Belongs to Rick Gengenbacher who during his tail twisting exploits mentioned how the Quincy Gems could get out of their financial hole with two words.
