He is a convicted killer and possibly has killed up to 60 people both domestically and internationally, has had a book written about him (Quincy native James Stewart's "Blind Eye") and is currently serving a life sentence in Colorado. He is Dr. Michael Swango and he was the topic of a discussion presented to our Club by our speaker Billy Meyer who was the chief investigator for the Quincy Police Department in the 1980s when this case presented itself. The case began in September of 1984 and went to trial on April 25th, 1985. Swango came onto the police radar after paramedics at Blessing Hospital were becoming ill after eating donuts and drinking iced tea that Swango gave them. The donuts and tea were later found to have ant killer in them. Swango also helped out that QND athletic events and dispersed drinking water during the game which made several players to become ill some 30 or so minutes after they consumed the drink. Police investigated the incidents and after Blessing officials opened Swango's locker they saw the ant killer. They tested the poison in Swango's locker with what was on the donuts and found a match. A later search warrant found ant killer and other poison's and poison recipes in Swango's apartment. Meyer believes that after they found the poisons in Swango's apartment, He transplanted ant hills in his yard as a defense. Our very own Kevin O'Donnell actually testified in the case as a result. With no one actually dying from the incidents, Swango was tried and convicted of aggravated battery. After serving time, the craziness of Dr. Swango got even more bizarre as he ended up getting several jobs as a doctor at Ohio State University, in Long Island and also in South Africa. In all three locations, many of Dr. Swango's patients died leading to plenty of speculation not only on the deaths but also on just how this man could get hired again. According to Meyer, rumors have it that Ohio State, a very prestigious medical school, paid off the families involved instead of charging Swango in those cases to preserve the University's status. In South Africa, Swango is wanted and would be executed if he would ever return there. Meyer also revealed that Swango was also one of the people that many feel may have been involved in the Tylenol scare in Chicago in the 1980's as well. With Swango incarcerated, look for more coming from him in the near future, perhaps an admission of guilt for other murders that are currently unsolved. Books are waiting to be written including one from Billy Meyer. If you missed the meeting you missed a good one.

This & That

Dr. Lenny Biallas initiated activities with our prayer followed by Vic Welper's exquisite pronunciation of the word "I" to begin the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Tail twisting duties were handled by Jared Haugh who shared some fatherly advice for the poor guy who asks his daughter out to the Homecoming dance. He also had a couple of other stories to share including being asked if he and his dad were brothers. A complement for Rick, but not so much for Jared.

Curt Moore with help from Tony Nutt handled the card draw which was worth $275. Doug Greenwell had the honors but drew a 7 of Diamonds so the pot will grow for next week's drawing.

We did have two guests with us last Friday as Josh Klitz joined us as a guest of Steve Labs.  Mike Wingerter also joined us. He is the uncle and guest of Jacob Huff
.

Line of the Week

Belongs to President Chuck Venvertloh, who was reading Club birthdays (with a great deal of difficulty I might add) and came upon Bob Hay's birthday without a number next to it. So Chuck just said

 - "I guess they couldn't read stones"
.
