2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

A familiar face will rejoin us for a second week in a row as Tracy Orne, a member of the Rotary Club (don't hold that against her), will be talking about Octoberfest which is set for Saturday, October 12th at the old Dick's Brewery site. The event will feature music, dancing, food and brewery tours and Tracy will have all the details for us Friday. Should be a good one so invite a guest (and they don't have to be German) to be with us.

With October being National Manufacturing Month, Tracy Orne, Jim Fuhrman and Roger Leenerts presented our program on changing the perception of "manufacturing".

Tracy, the Director of Public Relations and Marketing at John Wood Community College, began the discussion by mentioning that her father worked in manufacturing for 45 years at Titan Wheel and provided his family with a good life because of it. But the role of manufacturing has and is changing. Manufacturing jobs makeup 17% of our economy with the average local salary being around $49,000. According to Tracy for every one manufacturing job, there are 2.9 other jobs created as a result of that job. One of the issues is the perception of working in a hot, dirty environment which is hardly the case anymore. As a result, many parents are not encouraging their children to pursue a career in manufacturing as evidenced by a survey that revealed that only 30% of parents encourage it.

Jim Fuhrman, the coordinator of Manufacturing at John Wood Community College, mentioned that JWCC has stepped up to the challenge and has installed machinery at the JWCC campus for students to learn not only how to work the machines but to do so safely by using quality procedures. They also learn math and computer skills as well. Once their course is completed they not only can get an Associate's Degree at John Wood but they also get a National Accredited Certificate which is recognized nationwide to assist them with future employment. According to Jim, the average age of students enrolled in the manufacturing course is 37 at a cost of approximately $4,500 a year.

Meanwhile, from the perspective of a businessman needing skilled workers, Roger Leenerts, the CEO of H & B Quality Tooling, revealed that jobs in the manufacturing field are down but the output is up due to having quality workers with good computer skills and automation. Roger mentioned that what was once done with a wrench is now done with a computer. Roger keeps an eye on his customer base which includes all of the larger manufacturing plants in the area. In his way of thinking, if those outlets have good skilled employees, they will continue to succeed and then so will his business. The problem is that many skilled workers are now retiring which is leaving a void for replacements

This & That

Our prayer was handled by John Spring who asked for divine guidance for the St. Louis Cardinals in the playoffs ahead.

Mike Brennan uttered the primary word to motivate the rest of the membership to follow up with the rest of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jeff Dorsey had the honors of fleecing the flock for a buck and took everyone's money but Dick Wentura's since he supported the Big Dog's hope for a Yankee-Cardinal World Series. During the collection he told a joke about Bu, Chu and Fu coming to America. Ask someone who was there if you missed it.

Curt Moore handled the 50-50 card draw which was worth $226 this week. Jim Benz had the right ticket but drew a Jack of Hearts. So the pot grows for next week.

Rich Lavery brought the only guest to the meeting and it was his son Michael. So we had two Mike Lavery's with us Friday.

President Chuck Venvertloh reminded everyone that the next Board Meeting is set for October 14th at The Pier (3rd floor). He also reminded everyone to please fill out your surveys prepared by Doug Greenwell last week. It only takes a few minutes to fill it out and bring it back this Friday. Also, Chuck revealed that we will be getting our risers, flag, bell and other items from The Eagle's Nest early next week and bringing them out to The Stoney Creek Inn for our future use.

In case you missed it (not naming anyone), Chuck revealed that we will be getting out risers, flag, bell and other items from The Eagle's Nest early next week and bringing them out to The Stoney Creek Inn for our future use.

Hope you all got to read your fall edition of the National Exchange Today magazine as our very own Dennis Koch was prominently featured in a couple of pictures. Dennis is on the Exchange Club Foundation's Board of Trustees
