In our first regular meeting at our new location of Stoney Creek Inn, our speaker last Friday was our very own Doug Greenwell who took the opportunity to review just what the Exchange Club does and why we do it. The Club has donated over $65,000 over the last two years to a variety of organizations in the area with the monies raised through two major fund raisers in Gus Macker and Smoke on the River. Doug also reviewed the Programs of Service that we are involved with.  Those programs are divided into four different categories of Youth Activities, Community Service, Child Abuse Prevention, and Americanism. Doug reviewed each program separately and then commented on how these programs just don't happen without club involvement. With that said, Doug prepared a survey for the membership regarding the Club. Please take a moment and fill it out and return it to Doug within the next two weeks.  The information provided will be used for the betterment of the Exchange Club.  He also distributed a New Member Interest Finder form for all new members of the Club to fill out.  Please fill this out as well if you are a new member.
Click survey or new member for copies of the forms.

Also part of Friday's program was our first Student of the Month presentation. John Johannes is the chairman of this monthly event with Dr. Lenny Biallas and Mike Llewellyn on the committee.  Each month throughout the school year we will select a student of the month.  Three will be from QHS and 3 from QND with one of the six winners determined to be the Student of the Year recipient of a $1000 scholarship.  That winner will also represent our club in the District competition and perhaps the National competition with the winner there getting a $10,000 scholarship.

The first recipient of the Student of the Month competition was Chase Crossan from Quincy Senior High School. Chase has a grade point average of 4.5783 and is ranked number one in a class of 487 students. Chase belongs to a variety of organizations including being Vice-President of the Key Club and National Honors Society, Beta Club, and Co-Captain of the QHS Scholastic Bowl team.  Chase plans on attending Washington University in St. Louis and majoring in Chemical Engineering with eventual plans of  going on to medical school and becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon.  Chase's parents, Brad and Kelly Crossan, were also in attendance along with Quincy Senior High Principal, Danielle Edgar and Counselor Mike Llewellyn who handled the introduction

This & That

Jim Benz handled the prayer which was a slightly shorter than the audio version of War and Peace.  Rich Zeidler began the Pledge as the group saluted a miniature version of Old Glory found in Jeff Dorsey's car and held proudly by Doug Greenwell for all to see.

Bruce Broemmel was the tail twister and told a particularly funny joke about a long haired 16 year old wanting to drive his father's car.

Jim Benz spoke about our very successful Character Champion's event at John Wood Community College (not Q.U. Chuck).  The short version was that it "went well".  The longer version included thanks to the Athletic Director's and Principal's in the area for supporting the event including our guest QHS Principal Danielle Edgar who was instrumental in the initial planning process for Character Champions.

President Chuck Venvertloh thanked Jim Benz for his efforts and all who were involved. He also mentioned that he received a thank you from the YMCA for our sponsorship of a team in the Little League baseball program at the Y.

Chuck held a second reading for prospective member Aaron Clark from Quincy Medical Group. The vote was unanimous to approve Aaron, so bring him in.  Thanks to Mike Elbe for sponsoring Aaron.

The card draw worth $200 was held by Curt Moore with Les Sachs holding the winning ticket. Les drew a 4 of spades so the pot remains without a winner.  It's been at $200 for the past weeks.  Someone needs to explain to me how it just remains at $200 especially after Curt was wearing a new golf shirt and bought new golf shoes last week.

Thanks to Mike McLaughlin who was the only member to assist Perry Terwelp with our Chili Dog Sales at the Blues in the District on September 13th.  Thanks also goes out to Danny Veihl for providing the chili dogs for the Club to sell and for setting up the tent that night.  The event raised $318 for the Quincy Medical Group's Autism Department.

Thought's go out to Gary Farha who lost his sister in law, Jeanne, who lost her battle with cancer. Our sympathies to Gary, his brother Mike and the Farha family.

Line of the Week

Belongs to Rick Goughnour, who after hearing that our Student of the Month had a grade point average of 4.5783 followed by President Chuck Venvertloh's comment that he once had a 5 out of 100 on a test in English, said
