Club Meets at Noon each Friday at Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway in Quincy
2012-2013 Lincolnland District Exchange Clubs Best Bulletin Award Winner
This Friday

Stoney Creek Inn

Our meeting this week will be at Stoney Creek Inn and NOT at The Eagle's Nest (see below*). Apparently The Nest cannot be disturbed so we are moving our location this Friday. Our speaker is yet to be determined, so I would be worried about him or her showing up at The Nest. I do know that we are scheduled to hold our first Student of the Month presentation this Friday. So bring a prospective member and join us at the new home of Quincy's Finest Hour!

Kate Dougherty Our speaker last Friday was Kate Dougherty who spoke about Down Country. Down Country is dedicated to helping provide training and promoting positive awareness for individuals of all disabilities and abilities. Kate has a Bachelor's Degree in History and Political Science and is the mother of four children including a son, Elliot, with Down Syndrome. Down Country is 100% manned by volunteers and has established a scholarship program for parents with special needs children. They are instrumental in fundraising to purchase iPads for children with learning disabilities. Last year they purchased 104 iPads and have exceeded 200 purchases over the last couple of years. They have a core group of 13 key volunteers who basically organize the agencies activities. They receive no monies from the State or Federal government. There are several events coming up for Down Country during Disability Awareness Month in October including a dinner on October 16th at the Town & Country Inn & Suites that will feature Dr. James Nuttall, the author of "Overcoming Dyslexia with the iPad". Dr. Nuttall will also be speaking at Culver-Stockton College on October 17th and attending a workshop in Palmyra and Hannibal LaGrange University that same day. Down Country is also hosting gluten free workshops at Quincy Steamboat on Friday, October 18th with a lunch presentation at 11am and a dinner presentation at 6pm by Suzanne Faber. To make a reservation to attend one of these and other events contact Down Country at 217-617-3568 or email : info@upatdowncountry.com . Thanks Kate for sharing your story with us and thank you to Dennis Koch for providing the introduction.

This & That

*Due to changes in the availability of Friday meeting dates and the potential loss of our current caterer if we stay at our current location, the Board of Directors have voted to move the location of Quincy's Finest Hour to the Stoney Creek Inn, 3809 Broadway (behind Steak 'n Shake and Applebees). The move is effective with our next meeting on Friday, September 20, 2013.

Former Mayor John Spring had the honors of beginning the meeting with our opening prayer, one that included his thankfulness that he was not the Mayor when the Newcomb Hotel burned down.

Eric Barnes did his homework and without any assistance uttered the first word of the Pledge of Allegiance accurately to which the membership, also remembering the words, joined in. There was nothing but dry eyes in the house when we were done (hotel needs a new humidifier).

Jeff Dorsey (that be me) handled the Tail Twisting duties with one flaw when the punch line of the joke I was telling was forgotten. Thanks to Sonny Christner who had heard the joke before bailed me out. I just realized I still charged Sonny a buck. I owe you one Mr. Christner.

There was no 50-50 drawing as no plan B was apparently worked out by Mr. Curt Moore before he left town.

Jim Benz reminded everyone about the 10th anniversary of Character Champion days in September. The 17th (today) is the day for Senior High students in the area and the 18th (Tomorrow) is the day for Junior High as well as 7th and 8th graders in the area to attend the event at John Wood Community College. Jim is needing about 9 or 10 members to help out with registration at JWCC. Just show up around 7:45 Wednesday morning.

President Chuck Venvertloh thanked everyone for their assistance with Smoke on the River. Rick Goughnour reported that we had 29 teams participate in the event and that we sold some $9,965 worth of raffle tickets. The ATV was won by Scott Lowenburg and the Beef Bundle was won by Frank Bange. The final numbers will be available in a few days.

President Venvertloh also held a first reading for prospective member Aaron Clark, an Athletic Trainer at Quincy Medical Group. Aaron is being sponsored by Mike Elbe (Keep the beer flowing Chuck).

According to President Chuck, the Club at its Board Meeting approved a $1,000 donation to the Salvation Army Christmas Dinner Fund. He also reported the Club is going to reinstitute the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament this winter.

The Club also received an invitation to a local day care center event which can tell you just what the outside world thinks of our membership (That's a joke for those who didn't get it).

Congratulations to Rich Zeidler who was inducted last Friday night, along with his teammates, into the Quincy College/University Soccer Hall of Fame.

Thanks to those who assisted Perry Terwelp with our Chili Dog sales during Friday's Blues in the District. Thanks Perry for chairing this one.

Only one guest last Friday and it was four year old Quinn Stalder, the son of Bill Stalder (not Stadler). Quinn actually put his father's tail twisting dollar in the bucket for his father. Get used to it Bill, he'll be asking for more later I am sure.

Jeff Dorsey (that be me again) became a grandfather for the 5th time as Jack Rogers was born last Friday in Peoria weighing 9 pounds and 10 ounces. Future Yankee third baseman.

Finally, our thoughts go to out to Dave Poland and his family as Dave lost his father who passed away on Thursday, September 12th. The visitation will be at Faith Presbyterian Church in Quincy. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 Tuesday (tonight) in the Church. Our prayers to you and yours, Dave.

Line of the Week

Belongs to Bob Hays who waited 'til the very end of the meeting to say it. When our speaker mentioned that she had heard that we could be a rowdy group and that she was surprised at how well we behaved, Bob said

 - "That's because you never took a breath."
