JillOur featured speaker was Jill Reffett, West Central Area Director of Special Olympics Illinois. Jill oversees the counties of Adams, Brown, Cass, Greene, Hancock, Pike, Schuyler & Scott Counties. Here locally, or within these 8 counties, the local Special Olympics office offers between 16-19 athletic competitions, two Special Olympics hosted fundraisers, and they have a little over 420 traditional athletes and about 1100 Young Athletes They are in the process of adding 1500-1900 school age athletes between this Fall and Spring in the Adams County schools, alone. For the first time in 41 years Special Olympics will be a part of the Quincy Public School system. So as you can see they are in the midst of exciting and dramatic changes of the local Special Olympics Illinois program. Jill spent some time thanking the Exchange Club for its involvement with the Special Olympic Basketball tournament over the past years and is hopeful it can be revived in the future. She also mentioned how involved the local law enforcement agencies are with Special Olympics as well. She also shared a story about her asking Quincy University Hall of Fame Soccer Coach Jack Mackenzie if he would be interested in coaching the Special Olympics soccer team to which he said he would only be available for local games and no road games. As the season progressed Jack ended up wanting to go on the road with the team and when they went to State there was no way he would stay home and there he was on the sidelines with the team. Thanks Jill for providing some insight on just what goes on with Special Olympics and how important it is for the athletes involved with it.

This & That

Jared Haugh made the membership come to their feet with his opening prayer. They remained standing as Zeke Cernea began the Pledge of Allegiance with a traditional spoken "I" (although I thought he just might sing it instead). For those who don't know, Zeke is an accomplished musician and has his new CD release party set for this Friday night at One Restaurant at 6th and Hampshire.

Rick Gengenbacher handled the Tail Twisting duties with quite a bit of flair and some of it directed at all of us for not asking Mike Lavery if he was the program (more on that later). He also posed a question of what if the Kinipples (friends of Mike Lavery) met up with the Titsworth family????? Leave it up to Rick!

Curt Moore handled the 50-50 Card Draw with birthday boy Rich Howell holding the winning ticket. Rich drew an 8 of Hearts so the pot remains at $200 for this Friday's drawing.

President Chuck Venvertloh reminded everyone about the upcoming 10th anniversary of Character Champion days in September. The 17th is the day for Senior High students in the area and the 18th is the day for Junior High as well as 7th and 8th graders in the area to attend the event at John Wood Community College.

Mike Lavery HOF Mike Lavery updated the club on his induction ceremony into the Gus Macker Hall of Fame in Belding, Michigan a few weeks ago. Mike spent two days there, played some golf and was inducted along with 6 other people. Mike displayed the plaque he received at the ceremony hosted by Gus Macker Founder, Scott McNeil. Mike also took some time to thank Mel Dillman who has been instrumental in helping with the Gus Macker Fundraising effort for quite some time. Mike also brought back some ideas to present to the Macker committee to try and make our tournament even better next May.

We had one guest last Friday and it was Chris Kirn of Refreshment Services Pepsi. Chris was the guest of Mike Elbe.

Perry Terwelp is needing some help with our involvement in the Chili Dog Competition with other local groups as part of this Friday night's Blues in the District. Basically, the Exchange Club will be selling Chili Dogs during the event from 5 until 9 this Friday night. If you can help, contact Perry at 228-3229 or 440-1109.

Finally, I mentioned at last week's meeting that, after I got slammed with a comment from Rich Zeidler, I would write something "nice" about Rich Zeidler in this week's bulletin... so here it is._________________(I couldn't think of anything to say). Hey, I did make you read it Rich!
