This Friday - Smoke on the River
Smoke on the River is here!

Mel Dillman will report on Smoke on the River to update us on all the activities on tap for Friday and Saturday. This is the 7th year for this event and Mel will take us through the progress of Smokin Pigthose years.

Staying with Smoke on the River for a bit, Mel Dillman addressed the club asking for people to sign up for this weekend's Smoke on the River event. Mel got some help from President Venvertloh who asked everyone to stand up and then asked those who have signed up to help to sit down. There were way too many still standing to prove Chuck and Mel's point. "We are a service club and we need your service from time to time" (words of our President). Mel also needs for everyone to assist with raffle ticket sales as well.

Don't forget there is a final pre- Smoke on the River meeting tonight (September 3rd) at 5:30pm at The Dock. Everyone is welcomed to attend the meeting. For more info on Smoke on the River, go to

Alz AssocJamie Foster, Kristen Kretzer and Tim Klobe from the Alzheimer's Association office were the speakers as they addressed the Club about Thursday's Walk to End Alzheimer's at Clat Adams Park at 5pm. The Club will have a team walking in the event thanks to Travis Brown , the organizer, who also introduced our guests. The local office also assists the caregivers in a five state area with information and provides moral support as well. The money raised from the walk will go towards that effort. Last year's walk raised $84,000 and it is hoped it will raise more money this year. One of the surprising facts relayed to the Club members was that apparently it is not a good idea to inhale the fumes emitted from a microwaved bag of popcorn when you first open the bag up. It has been proven that it is a contributing factor of people developing Alzheimer related problems. For more info on the walk you can go to www.alz.org or call 228-1111 for the local office which is located on the second floor of the Quincy Senior Center.

Chris Scarano

The Club expanded by one more member when Chris Scarano was inducted into the Club. Gary Peters had the honors of conducting the ceremony with Chris' sponsor, Dan Veihl, by his side. Something else was by Dan's side and that was a 12 pack of beer complements of Club President Chuck Venvertloh who again made good on his promise that he would give beer to all members who sponsor a new member.

Gary handled the ceremony with his usual wit when he said, "usually we pick underachievers to join the Club." Then he turned to Dan Veihl and shook his hand and said, "Nice job Dan"!

Chris Scarano, hardly an underachiever, is a former career Navy guy with a wife and 3 children. He is originally from New Jersey or as New Yorkers say "Jersey".

This & That

Jim Benz began the meeting with our prayer asking for some rain for the area, some good weather for next week's Smoke on the River event and good judgment from our leaders with regard to the Middle East. Might be asking a lot for the last part.

Steve Wellman, looking for the cue card this week, managed to begin the Pledge of Allegiance with a robust "EYE" or was it "I". No cue card so I don't know.

Bruce Broemmel handled the Tail twisting chores and did so with a fine joke regarding a man and a woman and a headache.

Curt Moore conducted the 50-50 drawing with newly inducted Chris Scarano holding the right ticket, but he drew a 5 of Diamonds so the pot of $200 remains for this Friday's card draw.

Only one guest last week and that was retired Air Force Lt. Colonel Gary Dorsey, brother of your humble reporter. Colonel Dorsey spent 28 years serving his country with tours of duty in Vietnam and Laos among his many destinations.

Jim Benz also spoke briefly about an upcoming 10th anniversary of Character Champion days in September. The 17th is the day for Senior High students in the area and the 18th is the day for Junior High as well as 7th and 8th graders in the area to attend the event at John Wood Community College. Jim also thanked member Mike Elbe for assisting with the program.

Good to see Tony Nutt back with us for a second consecutive meeting. He must have forgotten the pot was won the week before.

Frese In an effort to re-introduce our membership let's greet Eric Frese who works at Cason, Huff and Schlueter Insurance. Eric and his wife, Tracy, are the proud parents of two children, Olivia who is 4 and Caleb who is 1. Eric's sponsor was Dennis Koch. Welcome Eric! We are glad you are in the Club.
