Coach Little
Football coaches Rick Little and Bill Connell of the Quincy High School Blue Devils and Quincy Notre Dame Raiders, respectively, were our speakers last Friday.  Both are going into the football season with high expectations for their teams.

For Coach Little this will mark his 12th year as a coach and 7th year as head coach of the Blue Devil program and has compiled a 64 and 47 overall record. His team finished 4 and 5 last year but don't let the record fool you as they lost 4 of those games by 8 points or less and two of those four in overtime.Coach Little commented on how he can see the development of the younger grade programs over the past years is helping to enhance the varsity level of play. The Blue Devils will be playing their first year in the combined Western Big Six and Mid- States Six Conference. He commented on how he has never fielded a team that has boarded a bus for a game and felt like they couldn't win that night. That kind of attitude has spilled over to his players as you can see the remarkable turnaround of the Blue Devil Football program over the last couple of years.

Coach Connell For Coach Connell, he is entering his 23rd season as head coach of the Raider program and has compiled a record of 154 and 72 over that span. His team finished last season at 5 and 5 and lost to Macomb in the playoffs. The Raiders are entering their first season in the West Central Conference. Coach Connell spent a good deal of his speaking time discussing the new IHSA rules of allowing limited practice time to prevent injury and heat related issues from occurring. He feels that this has put his team at somewhat of a disadvantage when they open the season at Hannibal since the Pirates have had no such limitations on practice time. It should be another exciting season of football at 10th and Jackson again this season.

Good luck to both teams as they open their seasons. The Blue Devils travel to United Township on Friday at 7:30 pm while the Raiders open their season on the road at Hannibal this Friday at 7pm.

Thanks to Rick Gengenbacher for the introduction of both coaches.

Smoke on the River
Smokin Pig

Speaking of BBQ, Mel Dillman addressed the crew and announced we are down to two weeks until "Smoke on the River".Mel placed signup sheets on the table for the "one or two" of you who will actually sign up (words of Mr. Dillman). He also stressed again the need to sell those raffle tickets to win a 2013 Kawasaki four-wheel ATV valued at $7500 or a $250 Beef Bundle from the Butcher Block. Mel is reporting ticket sales of $4,120 so far for the Smoke on the River Raffle.  If you need more tickets to sell or posters to put up at your workplace, contact Mel at 228-1208.

Mel Dillman could still use some help on proposing the Corporate sponsorship package for Smoke on the River. The package cost has been adjusted downward to entice more sponsors and it includes up to 10 people to enjoy the BBQ with beverages from 3pm on Friday (September 6th) and a chance to hang out in the cooking pits the entire time with the Pit Master. All ten people will receive their very own Smoke on the River folding chair to keep as well.Basically, it is a party for ten for just $1,000. Please let Mel know if you have any suggestions of organizations that might want to enjoy the night at Smoke on the River.

Don't forget there is a Smoke on the River meeting every Tuesday, including tonight (August 27th) at 5:30pm at The Dock. Everyone is welcomed to attend the meeting.  For more info on Smoke on the River, go to www.smokeontheriver.net.

This & That

Mike Lavery had the honors of opening the meeting with a prayer followed by Tony Nutt, with the help of a Chuck Venvertloh cue card with an "I" on it, started the Pledge of Allegiance. Thank God Chuck didn't turn the card or we would have stated the Pledge with "H pledge allegiance to the flag....."

It was good to see Tony back at a meeting. He was only there to win the 50-50 pot so we won't see him for a while again since that pot was WON by Jimmy Louthen when he drew the ace of spades. His winnings were worth $1,622. That's a lot of BBQ. There were only 12 cards left in the deck when Jimmy selected the winning one. Congratulations Jimmy!

Bruce Broemmel handled the tail-twisting duties and relayed a particularly funny joke regarding an elderly couple, intimacy, and their Blue Cross-Blue Shield card.

A second reading was held before the membership on the application of Chris Scarano to join the club. With no objections we hope to bring him into the Club next week.  He is being proposed for membership by Dan Veihl.

Special guests last week included Aaron Clark of Quincy Medical Group and Chris Zeidler from Madison, Wisconsin. Chris was the guest of his father, Rich, and Aaron was the guest of Mike Elbe who stated Aaron is a prospective member as well.

Travis Brown is still looking for walkers for the Exchange Club's Walking Team for the upcoming Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimers on September 5th at 5pm. That event will be held with walkers going from Clat Adams Park to The Dock and back (only if you don't stop and have a beer at The Dock).Contact Travis if you are interested.

Congratulations to Mike Young on his new position at QND. Mike will be a religion teacher this year, as well as the Director of Christian Formation for QND.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Dave Poland and his family.  Dave's father is in a St. Louis Hospital with pneumonia. Here's hopes for a speedy recovery.

Goes to Coach Bill Connell who offered this gem.  After commiserating about the lack of practice time with his players forced upon him by the new IHSA rule, the QND Coach said that the lack of practice time with his team is so bad that he is
