Autism Check
A very interesting story was told last week by our speakers Carla Shank and Sally White. They are involved in a project to develop a prototype Autism Medical Alert GPS Bracelet. This bracelet would work for people with other ailments as well so they can be found in the event they wander off and get lost. Their primary interest is for people suffering with autism. Both ladies have children with autism which has made them seek out support for these bracelets. Their drive to accomplish this led Sally to develop a patent for the bracelet currently being developed by a firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Carla and Sally have already met with Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to get his support of the project and to get insurance companies to accept the idea as well. The cost of the prototype bracelet is in the neighborhood of $18,000 which is why they are holding the 2nd Annual Shade White Autism Medical Alert Fish Fry Benefit on Saturday, August 24th at the American Legion Building in Palmyra, Missouri. Shane, who has autism, is the son of Sally and her husband, Clayton. The meal will be served at 5:30 that day at a cost of $10 for adults, $5 for children 4 to 10 years of age and free for children 3 and under. A Live auction will take place a7 with live music from Jared Keim at pm. A web site of
shadewhitemedicalalert.com has all the details. Joining Sally and Carla at the meeting Friday was Carla's son, Brady. Perry Terwelp provided the introduction and at the conclusion of the meeting President Chuck Venvertloh presented the ladies a check for $250 from the Exchange Club.
Newest Man of Action
Kennth Rieffer
Ken Rieffer
We inducted a new member into the Club Friday which cost President Venvertloh another 12 pack of beer as Kenneth Rieffer of Riverside Smoke House joined our group. Dennis Koch was his sponsor and Gary Peters handled the ceremony with his usual biting humor. Gary's comment to Kenneth was " I never forget a face but in your case, I'll make an exception". Kenneth has been married for 16 years and has two daughters. Welcome Ken (keep your dukes up)!

This & That

Mike Elbe, after several weeks absence from previous meetings, handled the prayer for us and even included a comment about his absence leading to his being asked to say the prayer. Let that be a lesson to those of you who don't show up at the meetings. (You are forgiven Mike).

Carlos Fernandez, who also has been absent lately, threatened to say the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish. He began it with "I" in English. How do you say "I" in Spanish? (Yo) (If he said it in Spanish, he would never be forgiven. We still love you Carlos)

Bruce Broemmel took on the tail-twisting duties and told a parachute joke along the way. He then took a verbal shot from Perry Terwelp who began his introduction of our speakers with "Thank's Bruce for giving me an EASY act to follow". I think I know who is tail-twisting next week. Better be ready to pony up Perry. That one is gonna cost you.

Mel Dillman updated the club with Smoke on the River. We have 8 teams now and expect around 40 by September. Mel also stressed to club members the importance of selling those raffle tickets. . We took in $805 in ticket sales last week. The tickets are $5 or 3 for $10 to win a 2013 Kawasaki four-wheel ATV valued at $7500 or a $250 Beef Bundle from the Butcher Block.. If you need more tickets, contact Mel at 228-1208.

Mel also thanked Vic Welper for working on getting the Exchange Club in the KC BBQ to set up a table and sell tickets at that event as well. If you need posters promoting Smoke on the River, contact Mel. Before he was finished, Mel after hearing Carlos make a threat to do the Pledge in Spanish, threw some tickets to Carlos and said "here's your green cards".

Don't forget there is a Smoke on the River meeting every Tuesday, including tonight (August 13th) at 5:30pm at The Dock. Everyone is welcomed to attend the meeting. Plus we still are in need of a Chairman for next year's Smoke on the River event. For more info on Smoke on the River, go to www.smokeontheriver.net.

Kent Anderson updated us on the judges needed for Smoke on the River. Based on 40 teams participating we would need some 50 judges and he currently has 52. Anyone wanting to be a certified judge needs to contact Kent as soon as possible.

President Chuck Venvertloh informed the club that he had received thank you notes from two organizations this week. One was the Advocacy Network for Children and the other was from the Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Complex. Both recently received a donation from the Club.

Chuck also told the Club that we have been challenged by the Rotary Club to be a part of the August 17
th Friends of the Trail Bike Ride. Anyone interested contact Chuck or Cullen Duke who is a member of the "Friends" organization.

Dennis Koch enlightened us on the National Exchange Club's web page. They have updated their password and Dennis filled us in on some of the material on the site and how to navigate through it. His talk led to a Skip Rueter comment of "What the hell is he talking about?" Thanks for trying Dennis.

The card draw is getting real interesting was the deck has been dwindled down to only 15 cards and the pot this Friday will be $1,540. This after birthday boy, Kirk Frageman had the right ticket but drew a 5 of Spades. The pot and the attendance will grow again Friday. Thanks to Curt Moore for handling the drawing.
