The Shade White Autism Medical Alert Fish Fry Benefit is set for Saturday, August 24th at the American Legion in Palmyra. She has been instrumental in trying to change some of the legislation in the State of Missouri regarding Autism issues and has even secured a meeting with Missouri Governor Jay Nixon on the topic. Frank Heck

Last Friday's meeting at Stony Creek Inn was an interesting one with our speaker, Frank Heck, discussing Video Gaming in the State of Illinois and particularly in our area. In order for Frank and his father, Don, to get a license, they had to prepare a 44 page application to the State Gaming Board. Plus they needed to go through two interviews in front of the board. Both had to pony up $5,000 to get the license and must pay $5,000 each annually to maintain it. The cost of the machines is also out of their pocket at 12 to 15 thousand dollars for each machine. Once a site inspection was completed, they then had to again go through the Illinois State Gaming Board for approval. The State Gaming Board approves about 250 to 300 new sites each month.

Frank informed the group that no gas station can have video gaming unless they are a convenience store as well. Truck stops are ok if they sell at certain limit of gasoline per month. The State of Illinois will allow up to 5 machines per site and that seems to be universal except for the City of Quincy who has limited sites to a maximum of two machines though a city ordinance.

Another interesting fact is that the machines are controlled by the State and they are turned on at 5am and off at 1am the next day. If someone is playing a machine and is winning at 12:58am a message will come on the machine saying it is about to be turned off so cash out now. If you don't, whomever walks in at 5am will get your earnings because the machine returns to where it left off. Gee, how many Exchangites have had a few too many and unknowingly left some money for the morning crew?

Frank operates 30 machines in the area with an average money intake of $1,500 to $2,000 per machine.

Curt Moore had the honors of handling the introduction

This & That

The meeting opened up with a Prayer from Jared Haugh followed by the beginning of the pledge by Kevin O'Donnell (Orson Welles would have been proud Kevin). With no flag present, we pledged to Dan Selby's Exchange Club shirt which had a portion of 'ol' glory" on it. Jared double dutied with tailtwisting.

Curt Moore with assistance from Rick Goughner handled the card draw worth $1,400. Your humbled reporter had the correct ticket but drew the ace of Clubs instead of Spades. That's two of the last three weeks I have come so close. Only 16 cards remain in the deck.

Our newest member, Eric Frese, was in attendance after his induction ceremony last week. He also sold a bunch of raffle tickets too! Way to go Eric. Next week we bring in Kenneth Rieffer of Riverside Smoke House as our next new member. Dennis Koch is his sponsor. Better get that 12 pack cooled down Chuck!

In Mel's absence, Curt Moore stressed the importance of selling the raffle tickets for Smoke on the River. The tickets are $5 or 3 for $10 to win a 2013 Kawasaki four-wheel ATV valued at $7,500 or a $250 Beef Bundle from the Butcher Block. With no ticket sales update last Friday, I suspect the captains, David Adam, Rick Veihl, Gary Peters and Perry Terwelp, will probable provide one Friday.

Curt also is seeking someone to chair the "Kids Zone" for Smoke on the River.   Contact Curt or Mel if interested.

Vic Welper has been busy working up posters for both the raffle as well as the Smoke on the River event. They were available for members to pick up and place at their workplace. We need to get the word out so please pick one up this Friday if you didn't last week.

Don't forget there is a Smoke on the River meeting every Tuesday, including tonight (August 6th) at 5:30pm at The Dock. Everyone is welcomed to attend the meeting. Plus we still are in need of a Chairman for next year's Smoke on the River event. For more info on Smoke on the River, go to www.smokeontheriver.net

Only one guest last Friday and that was former member Jerry Ebbing (or is it Grawe?) Mr. Ebbing was a guest of Jeff Dorsey who managed to misidentify him.

Corrections

In last week's bulletin, New member Eric Frese's wife was mistakenly identified as Tanya. Her name is Tracy - sorry about that Eric. But who the heck is Tracy, then? Anyway, our apologies to Tracy.
