This Friday
This Friday we take a break and enjoy America's birthday. No meeting this week but we resume next Friday, July 12th. Gee, new President Chuck Venvertloh begins his regime and the board elects not to have anybody show up. Don't take it personal Chuck. We are looking for great things from you as our leader. See you next week at the "Eagles Nest" when our topic will be "Barbeque".

Friday Last
Last Friday we inducted our new officers for the upcoming year. They include Doug Greenwell, Doug Reed, Steve Labs, Joel Koch, David Adam, and Alan Musholt. The Treasurer will be Chris Parker. The Secretary will be Cullan Duke. The Vice President will be Jared Haugh with Curt Moore as the President-Elect under new President Chuck Venvertloh. All "stated their name" as they were sworn into office in a ceremony conducted by Mel Dillman who handled it just like the late Max Johnson would have conducted it.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, our speaker, Scott Douglas, was introduced by David Adam. Scott spoke about the Catholic Heart Work Camp for 2013 that just concluded. Some 106 Quincy Notre Dame students bussed some 19 hours to Virginia Beach, Virginia to a work camp involving over 300 plus kids. The young people worked painting the rooms of elderly, building a fence, painting the outside of homes as well as other activities. Each student raised their own money to attend the camp with other donations assisting to cover the $650 cost per person involved. The week long camp saw the students stay at a Catholic School in Virginia Beach where they set up air mattresses and slept on the floor of the school. They would wake up around 6am, attend a prayer session and then head off to work for the day. According to Scott the students actually experienced Christ's work thru themselves as the people helped out by the students were invited to the school one night to express their gratitude. There are apparently 50 or so camps like this around the country and the students get to select what camp they would like to go to each year. This is the 15th year that QND has participated in the 20 year history of the Catholic Heart Work Camp program.

Exchangite of the Year and DSA
Last year's Exchangite of the Year recipient, Vic Welper, had the honors of announcing this year's Bill Hageman Exchangite of the Year, who was Curt Moore. Curt has been involved in nearly all aspects of the Club since the day he joined. He has been involved in the Club's activities, sponsored new members, and is eager to help out when asked. He has chaired or co-chaired Gus Macker and Smoke on the River. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the past three years and is now the President-Elect of our Club. Congratulations Curt. You are deserving of the honor of being this year's Exchangite of the Year. Curt's lovely bride, Charlotte, was in attendance to see Curt receive his award. Then it was time to announce the winner of the John Tripp Distinguished Service Award. Gary Peters had the honor of revealing this year's recipient as Mel Dillman. Mel has been in the Club since 1986 and was President in 1991-1992. He is a former Exchangite of the Year recipient and has served as Chairman for both Gus Macker and Smoke on the River and is chairing both this year. Mel has been instrumental in bringing in new members to our Club and is a Veteran, having served two tours of duty in Vietnam. I am sure that John Tripp would agree that Mel is deserving of being this year's recipient of the John Tripp Distinguished Service Award. Congratulations Mel and thanks for all that you do for the Exchange Club. Mel's lovely bride, Linda, was also in attendance to see Mel receive his award.

Lincolnland District Convention
Joel Koch announced that the Exchange Club was the recipient of several awards at the recent Lincolnland District Convention. Quincy received the 5A's award, while Dennis Koch received the Kremer-Clarkson-Krause Communications award, named in part after the Old Indian Fighter, Paul Clarkson. Vic Welper and Gary Peters were recognized as finalists for District Exchangite of the Year and Distinguished Service Award, respectively and your humbled reporter received the award for the District's Best Bulletin. I am sure it was submitted by Perry Terwelp or Dennis Koch, so my thanks go out to them. I must also thank Dennis a second time as I actually write the bulletin and Dennis assembles it for those who are not aware. So some of this award belongs to him as well. Dennis Koch and Scot Warren (of Naperville) received a "Shining Star" trophy from outgoing Regional Vice President Katie Smith for their help over the past four years.

This & That
Jim Benz led us in prayer followed by the baritone voice of Joel Koch with the initial verbiage for the Pledge of Allegiance. Our Tail Twister took the week off.
President Perry Terwelp announced that Fred Lauder is recuperating at Blessing Hospital in room 2001after undergoing heart surgery. Prayers for Fred's speedy recovery are needed.
Perry presented Barb Chapin of Transitions a $5,000 check from the Exchange Club. Barb thanked the Club and announced that the money will be going to purchase an automatic door opener for the disabled who have had difficulty in entering their own living facility.
Clarice Hetzler of the Children's Advocacy Network was also presented a check for $5,000 from the Club. Clarice thanked the Club and recognized the Exchange Club for actually providing seed monies for their program years ago in their fight to protect sexually abused children in the area.
The 50-50 drawing was held with Jim Lierly having the winning ticket but he drew the 3 of Clubs so the pot of $1,159 grows even more.
Chuck Venvertloh handled his final card draw last Friday.
Following the officer installation and award festivities, Perry was presented the President's plaque by incoming President Chuck Venvertloh. Chuck then took over the reins and thanked Perry for his work the past year and established a couple of goals of his own. One was to have a Plus-5 rating on new members with the offer of a 12 pack of beer to anyone who brings in a new member. His main goal though was to be more fiscally responsible with our budget. Good luck to Chuck as he begins his tenure is our next President of the Quincy Exchange Club.

Line of the Week
Belongs to Perry Terwelp when he turned to Gary Peters and said
- "do you ever wonder what Quincy would be like today if Gary Peters would have beaten Verne Hagstrom for Mayor...That boat in LaGrange would be in Quincy today!"
