Paulette Sackett

After our first road trip in a long time (The Quincy Mall) we gathered back at America's Best Value Inn last Friday with Paulette Sackett as our speaker. Ms. Sackett, from Great River Recovery Resources, discussed the very serious problem in our area of Meth and Kids. In her conversation with us she relayed that Adams County has three times as many meth arrests than any other county in Illinois and is one of the top counties for meth arrests in the country. Most of that is due to an active and informed group of law enforcement personnel.

The relatively new method of making meth, known as the "shake and bake" method, has enhanced its availability in the area. Most people smoke meth and when they do it gives them a sense of pleasure, power, and control and can last from 12 to 15 hours. Most people are high and remain awake from meth for 3 to 5 days and then they sleep for 1 to 3 days. If parents are meth users, the question becomes who is watching the children during those times?

According to Ms. Sackett, there are many cases of children fending for themselves eating things like chocolate syrup and ketchup while their parents are high. Meth causes people to have blood flow shut down for their extremities which causes people to lose their teeth and to have their gums to recede. Many of the fires in Quincy are caused by people who are cooking meth. Also the drug traffic in and out of homes of people using meth is leading to more and more sexual abuse of the children in those homes. There are even cases of parents teaching their kids how to cook and use meth. In closing, Ms. Sackett mentioned that Recovery Resources provides prevention education programs to schools in the area and that every dollar spent in treatment saves $7 to $9 in societal costs.

A very interesting as well as informative program and our thanks to our speaker, Paulette Sackett, for updating us on an extremely serious problem. Thanks to Rick Goughnour for providing the introduction.

This & That

John Spring sprang to his feet and delivered our opening prayer and it was followed by Dennis Koch initiating the Pledge of Allegiance wearing his "flag" shirt on Flag Day.

The Quincy Exchange Club was notified by National President Lou Molitor that we were the recipient of the National Exchange Club's National Service Award. You see our hard work doesn't go unnoticed.

Mel Dillman announced that the final numbers for the recent Gus Macker Tournament might be down just a little due to the rain that fell on Saturday's games. Next year's chairman will be Steve Green with Perry Terwelp as his co-chair.

At the Exchange Club Board Meeting, the Board approved a $5,000 donation to Transitions and a $5,000 donation to the Children's Advocacy Network's endowment fund.

The Club also received a thank you note from Holly Cain from the Quincy Visitors and Convention Bureau for our involvement with the recent Fishing for Freedom event in Quincy. Through Jared Haugh, the Club also received a thank you from our recent Golden Deeds Award winner JoAnne Witte.

Jarad Haugh also had signup sheets on tables for golfers for Friday's golf event. If you can play and have not let Jared know, please do so as soon as possible as he is "slanting" the teams to make him the eventual winner.

Family Picnic 2013 President Terwelp mentioned the nice gathering of members and their families for the annual Flag Day cookout and presentation of flags for the Quincy Park Band Concert at Madison Park. Dan Veihl and The Butcher Block catered our meal with free shaved ice provided by Gengenbacher Ice.

Believe in the Blue Check

President Terwelp and Steve Labs presented Barb Chapin of Transitions a check for $1500 from money raised at Hy-Vee Foods during their Blue Ribbon sales as part of the Exchange Club's Day of Service Child Abuse Prevention Program. Thanks Steve for spearheading this effort at Hy-Vee.

Perry and Mudders A big thank you goes to Perry Terwelp for chairing our Exchange Club team of "mudders" for the YMCA's Mud Mania endurance event last Saturday. Perry actually changed into a "Mud" shirt during the meeting and then thanked his teammates of Joe Long, Alex Huddleston, Brandon Mayfield, and Travis Beaver. And guess what, the Exchange Club actually won the service club category and the large trophy that came with it. Congratulations guys!

In Chuck Venvertloh's absence, Joel Koch conducted the 50/50 drawing. With the pot worth over $1,034 Dick Wentura got the opportunity to draw the winning card (which is the ace of Spades for those who may not know). Dick drew a 2 of Spades to the delight of the club members (nice to have friends Dick) so the pot will grow more for this Friday's drawing at Spring Lake Country Club.

The next Smoke on the River meeting will be held tonight (Tuesday, June 18th) at 5:30 at The Dock. Everyone is welcomed. That event on September 6th and 7th will be here before we know it. Anyone interested in becoming next year's chairman should contact Mel as soon as possible.

Be advised that the Exchange Club Board of Directors voted to not have a meeting on July 5th
