Macker 2012
It is beast before beauty as we hold the Gus Macker Tournament meeting this week followed by Miss Illinois next week on Friday. If all goes as usual we will hold our lunch followed by a short meeting to review final details of preparations needed to make the Gus Macker tournament a huge success. Once the meeting concludes, those who can will head over to help with afternoon registration at Washington Park.

MarcelWe were honored to get to know more about Marcel Wagner, the new President of the Great River Economic Development Foundation (GREDF). Marcel comes to us from Lima, Ohio and is a native of New Jersey. He is a New York Yankee fan as well. (I like him already). He has a degree in Economics and is working to treat economic development as a profession. He began his position on March 11th replacing the retired Jim Mentesti. Mr. Wagner has been visiting with local business people on business retention and workforce development. He has also been in contact with outside business people in hopes of luring them to come to Quincy and set up shop. He also is encouraging local entrepreneurs to pursue their business dreams and is working on opening up communications internally and externally at GREDF. He was introduced by Mike McLaughlin.

Prior to Mr. Wagner's comments the Club was presented a video by Quincy Junior High School Autism teachers Stephanie Baze and Tara Stark. The video, with help from Eric Thomas, showed how the autistic students are using their new iPods that were purchased for them recently thanks to a $2000 donation from the Quincy Exchange Club. President Terwelp said it best after the video that "this is why we hold the Gus Macker Tournament each year to enable us to make donations for things like this".
Spring Character Champions

Also during the meeting Jim Totsch conducted a special Character Champions presentation to three outstanding area students who were chosen by their schools as outstanding student athletes.

All three showed great sportsmanship and were great mentors to others. This, by the way, is the 9th year for the award winning program.

A special thanks to the Tracy Family Foundation, for their support of the program for the past several years. It would be difficult to continue this program without their support and the support of all of our sponsors!

This & That

The meeting began with a prayer by Jared Haugh followed by the Pledge of Allegiance which was begun with a hearty "I" by Paul Terwelp. There was no time last week for a tail twister during our full meeting.

President Perry Terwelp announced that the board made a $200 donation to birthright and also donated the Club's second tent to the QND Football program. He also announced that the board has asked Chuck Venvertloh to head up a committee to decide on a major donation from the club to a worthy cause. Several options were presented at the recent board meeting.

President Terwelp also remarked that there are several members with outstanding dues. Please take care of that as soon as possible. He also presented new membership certificates to Steve Eckert, Gary Farha and Mike Young during the meeting. Perry mentioned that there are two new members coming in the weeks ahead.

Thanks to everyone who helped at Hy-Vee with the sale of Child Abuse Prevention Blue Ribbons last weekend. Steve Labs headed that project up and we appreciate his efforts.

Curt Moore announced that the next Gus Macker meeting will be tonight (May 22nd) at The Dock. Vic Welper told the group that we have 31 paid court sponsors and 8 in kind sponsorships which is down 2 from last year. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to sell these sponsorships.

Thanks to everyone who assisted with the court tapings on Sunday.

The real need now is Gus Busters or court officials. Scott Westhaus revealed that we have 38 signed up and we need around 80. You do the math here. We are desperate so please ask your friends, enemies, or neighbors to sign up especially if you yourself cannot do it. We pay $25 a day or $75 for both days plus you get fed and a t-shirt as well.

Dick Wentura with enough 50/50 tickets to wall paper his garage had the right ticket but drew an 8 of hearts so the pot of $931 grows next week.

Our Flag Day event is set. We will once again have our family picnic on the evening of June 12th. The shelter house at Madison Park has been reserved and Dan Veihl and The Butcher Block will cater our meal with free shaved ice provided by Gengenbacher Ice. You are invited to join us for the meal which starts at 5:30 and then when the concert starts we'll pass out the flags to the audience in the park.

Don't forget about the Exchange Club Golf Tournament at Spring Lake Country Club on Friday, June 21st. Contact Jared Haugh for more information.

Goes to Gary Peters. After Aubrey Venvertloh was honored as a Character Champion she was asked if Chuck Venvertloh was her father to which she nodded yes. Gary then fired off the following.

Macker Time is Time to Step to the Plate Gentlemen

Gus Macker is our largest fundraiser for the year. The proceeds from Macker pay for the Youth of the Year and Bud Willer scholarships, the flags we distribute at Dogwood, Law Officer and Firefighter of the Year, Golden Deeds and many of our other projects. While we all enjoy the fun on Fridays, we need every member to step up this week to help make our 23rd Macker a success.

We are in desparate need of Gus Busters - at last count we had 38 Busters and we need about 70. Busting is hard work and isn't for everyone. That's why we pay and feed them! $25 for each day with an additional $25 if you work both (that's $75 for the math challenged). If you can't work the games yourself, recruit someone to at least work one of the days as a Buster.

Speaking of feeding the Busters, We need help in the Buster tent this year, too. All of the Busters will be eating here and all of the players will be getting their free water here this year, so we'll need plenty of help. Last week's sign-up sheet didn't exactly fill the time slots so there are plenty of openings!

We always need folks to help in the registration tent - especially on Saturday morning. Don't get me wrong, we need help on Friday afternoon and evening, and we ususally get a pretty good turn-out to help at those times. The big crush comes Saturday morning at 7 a.m. when we'll have 900 to 1,000 players to register with only a handful of volunteers. So bring your spouse, significant other (but not both), friends and relatives to help Friday, Saturday or both.

Can't help on Saturday or Sunday? We can always use help Friday evening placing the baskets and barricades. We need your help! Don't wait to be asked - Step up and volunteer! Contact Curt Moore, Mel Dillman, Dave Poland, Rick Gengenbacher, Dave Adams, or any of the officers to find a spot to help.

Thanks!
