Bill and Lenny Bart

Lenny Bart, the Executive Director of the Quincy Community Theatre, joined us and enlightened us on the exciting things happening at the theatre. Bill Stalder did his homework and offered us an informative introduction of Mr. Bart.

Mr. Bart enthusiastically revealed that the next production coming up is "The Rainmaker" which will run May 2nd thru the 5th and then May 9th thru the 11th. Tickets are still available but going fast.

Lenny also reviewed the history of the QCT which is in its 76th season this year. There have been over 400 performances held and over 40 student theatre productions as well during that time period. The theatre got its start in 1923 and moved from its 13th and Payson location to the Oakley Lindsay Center in 1995. The Friends of the Theatre in the 90's needed to raise 1.25 million dollars to receive a matching grant to enable it to move into its current location. They were able to accomplish that and the rest is history.

They have three supplemental funds to assist them and they are the Rose Inghram Endowment Fund, the Bee Jay Adams Fund and the Rose Lacquement Fund. They average between 22 and 27 thousand patrons each season, all of which helps the area's restaurants, shops and hotels.

The QCT also donates some 3000 tickets to seniors, schools and non-profit organizations each year. They are also in need of volunteers to assist with the box office, ushering, being a member of the running crew for the production department, set building and general phone answering. They also have sponsorship opportunities for the entire season or for individual shows . The QCT employs 7 full time people who help with the many outreach workshops, school visits and tours that are conducted. For more info on the Quincy Community Theatre, go to www.1qct.org.

Bud Willer A.C.E. Award
Alexis Bonebrake
Alexis Bonebrake ACE 2012

Prior to Mr. Bart's presentation the Exchange Club was honored to present this year's Bud Willer Award. The award is named after former club member Bud Willer, who after playing football in the 1940's at the University of Iowa came back to Quincy and began working at the Department of Rehabilitation. After seeing some of his students overcome adversity he brought the idea to the club and it has been an annual award presented every year since then. The award was formerly known as the ACE Award winner with ACE standing for Accepting the Challenge with Excellence. It became the Bud Willer Award in the early 1970's.

Our winner, Alexis Bonebrake of Quincy, was introduced by her Quincy Senior High School Counselor Mike Llewellyn and was presented the award by the Bud Willer Chairman John Johannes.

Alexis is suffering from Myelodysplastic Syndrome or MDS. MDS is a disease that affects the bone marrow and blood. In MDS, the bone marrow does not make enough normal blood cells for the body. Despite having MDS, Alexis has taken on the challenge of dealing with it and in her own words "hopes to inspire others to be thankful for their health and to help them to grow to become a better person". Now you can see why she is the Bud Willer Award winner. Good luck Alexis, you are very much deserving of this award and the $1000 scholarship that goes with it.

Alexis is now entered in the District AC E competition and perhaps can go on to the National ACE competition as well where a $10,000 scholarship awaits the winner. Alexis' parents, Kate and Dan Nuessen were in attendance along with Quincy Senior High School Principal Danielle Edgar
.

This & That

Mayor John Spring provided the inspiration for the Club with the prayer which included the hope for no more rain for a while.

Cory Watson not only began the Pledge of Allegiance with the word "I", but he followed it with the word "pledge" as well. He must really be doing his homework.

President Perry Terwelp reminded everyone, on Dave Poland's behalf, that we will need members to pass out flags during the Dogwood Festival on Saturday, May 4th.

Again a reminder, with funding available, the board is also looking for recommendations to give a major donation to a local organization. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let a board member know before the next meeting which is scheduled for May 13th.

Cory Watson updated us on some of the Gus Macker news we needed to know. A few weeks ago, Vic Welper handed out court sponsor sheets and as of this writing we have only a dozen signed up. Please make those contacts as soon as possible. It is getting close to tip off time. Also, we apparently have three Macker Man displays but all three are AWOL. Does anyone know where they may be? If so contact Cory, Mel Dillman, or our Macker Chairman Tony Nutt.

Rick Gengenbacher, filling in for Dave Rees, announced that the Club has selected the winner of the Golden Deeds Award. This year's winner is Jo Anne Witte, the Daughter in Law of former Exchange Club member Al "Buck" Witte. Mark your calendar for that great event on May 10th. You won't want to miss that one.

Mr. Chuck Venvertloh held the 50/50 drawing with Dick Wentura (another previous big time winner of the pot) having the winning ticket. Dick drew an ace but not the ace of spades. It was the ace of hearts so the pot grows even more. Next week's pot will be worth over $763.

Jeff Dorsey handled the Tail Twisting duties and told a "respectable" joke regarding a wife about to deliver a baby, her husband and the postman. You tell your own joke out of that information.

Kevin Curran had as his guest Andrew Asbury, Kevin's new partner at Modern-Royal Printing. At least we believe it was Andrew because Kevin introduced him by some other name (must be that witness protection name plan).
