Joanne Dedert

Our speaker was Joanne Dedert from Madonna House in Quincy on short notice as our scheduled speaker had an emergency come up and will be rescheduled for a future date. Joanne was kind enough to inform us of all the good work that the Madonna House has been doing since it opened its doors in May of 1988. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the existence of Madonna House and it will mark the occasion with an anniversary celebration at the Town & Country Inn and Suites at 5 pm on Tuesday, April 23rd. The public is invited. Joanne started out with the words "homelessness is alive and well in Quincy". Their organization provides a save environment for women and children in the area. Joanne talked about one such case a woman and her child came to Madonna House after being ostracized from her family. She was at the house for 9 months and during that time the Madonna House worked with her to become independent. As a result of their efforts her family reunited with her and she has left the house and is back living on her own with her daughter. The Madonna House provides a shelter for women up to two years with the average stay at the home being around 6 to 9 months. The Madonna House also is a food pantry for many with the pantry open Tuesdays from 1 to 3 pm and Saturdays from 9 to noon. It is also has a clothing closet for women to find business attire to aid in their search for employment. Joanne also mentioned that the Madonna House works closely with the YWCA and Quanada to aid women and children in the area. In 2011 and 2012, 68 individuals were helped by the Madonna House of which 28 were mothers and 5 were pregnant women so you can see the need has been there. Thanks again to Joanne for being our speaker on very short notice Friday.

Youth of the Year
Steven Musholt
YOY Steven Musholt
The Exchange Club was honored to name Steven Musholt of Quincy Notre Dame High School as our winner of the Student of the Year Award. Steven had some stiff competition for 5 other candidate but won the award with his essay about "Youth Volunteerism: Working Magic in Communities". Steven gets a nice scholarship that goes with the award and will represent our Club in the District competition. He also will be attending the nation's Army Military Academy at West Point, New York. His proud parents Alan and Carolyn Musholt were in attendance along with his uncle, Brian, and grandfather, Frank. Alan and Brian are current members and Frank is a former member of the Exchange Club. Also in attendance was QND Principal Mark McDowell. Dr. Len Biallas handled the introductions.

This & That

Mike Lavery began the meeting with a prayer followed by a stirring beginning of the Pledge by Dave Grimm.

President Perry Terwelp congratulated Kyle Moore on becoming the next Mayor of Quincy and thanked John Spring for is previous work as Mayor of the city. Both are Exchangites but were not in attendance Friday.

Perry also mentioned the thank you received from the Harold Stroot Family for the flowers the Exchange Club sent for the former Exchange Club President's funeral service. He also mentioned a thank you from the Advocacy Network for Children and the Boy Scouts for the club's recent donations to those organizations.

At the recent board meeting the Club authorized a donation of $250 to the YMCA and a $250 donation to The Madonna house which President Terwelp presented to our speaker, Joanne Dedert.

With funding available, the board is also looking for recommendations to give a major donation to a local organization. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let a board member know before the next meeting which is scheduled for May 13th.

Dave Poland reminded the membership of our upcoming flag giveaway at the Dogwood Festival on May 4th. We will have the Boy Scouts carry our big flag while we follow behind handing out flags. Bring your kids and grandkids to help out. This is one event that doesn't require any effort other than walking down Maine Street. If you have any questions, get a hold of Dave Poland.

Dave Rees announced the Club has selected the winner of the Golden Deeds Award. The winner's name will be revealed after she is contacted which has not happened as of this writing. Mark your calendar for that great event on May 10th. You won't want to miss that one.

Chuck Venvertloh (doing his best Chester act...if you know who that is you are old) hobbled around and conducted the 50/50 drawing with Gary Peters ( a previous big time winner of the pot) having the winning ticket. Unfortunately for Gary and fortunately for everyone else, he drew a Queen of Spades. So the pot of $717 continues to grow. Might need to check ID's of some of these "long time-no see" members to make sure they are who they are in the week ahead.

Rick Gengenbacher fleeced the flock for a buck as the Tail Twister and brought some semblance of order to the ritual which has drifted from the norm lately. During his venture around the room Rick quoted a former "Gus Buster" who was facing the judge in court and stated "80 years in prison Judge for smoking some weed? Come on Judge!" For the record he was given a ten year sentence. There had to be more involved than the weed. Now when he gets out of prison in 10 years he can become a Gus Buster again since he will have more "court" experience than most.

Our sympathy goes out to Curt and Charlotte Moore. Charlotte lost her mother last week. Our thoughts and prayers to the Moore family
