Derby

We were honored to be elbowed and hip checked by Jessica Patel and Ashley Jansen of The Dark Diver Derby Coalition, Quincy all-women's roller derby team. Jessica is the President of this up and coming organization and she provided commentary and a video of some recent action by the team. If you think this roller derby team is like the ones you grew up watching on TV, forget about it. They are nothing like that, but they are aggressive and will spend some time in the penalty box from time to time. These ladies will be entering their third season at Scotties Fun Spot in Quincy and will feature six home "bouts" (not games) with the first one happening on Saturday, May 11th. The first year they went 1 and 9 but rebounded last year to a respectable 7 and 4 mark. Currently, they have 28 players on their roster with over half of them mothers. By rules they can only carry 14 players for each bout they have. These ladies skate on a flat oval course during the game and the object is to get the players known as "jammers" past the "blockers" to score points. They have two 30 minute halves with an intermission to allow fans to enjoy some great food and beverages with includes beer and margaritas so I expect a few Exchangites will be making an appearance this season. This non-profit organization donates their time to the community and each bout features a donation to a non-profit organization in the area from the Dark River Derby Coalition. All kids 12 and under are admitted free of charge to any of their bouts. They are always in need of volunteers and referees to make the evening go smoothly. For more information, go to darkriverderby.com. The Dark River Derby Coalition home dates are listed below:

Future home dates: 5-11, 6-1, 7-13, 8-24, 9-14, and 10-26

This & That

Mayor John Spring did his best Pope Francis impression and handled the prayer to start our meeting. The prayer included a request that there be a good turnout for the Mayoral election. Speaking of the election, the best of luck to both Mayor John Spring and his challenger Kyle Moore. We should be honored that both men are members of our Exchange Club. Remember, the polls will be open until 7pm Tuesday night (April 9th) so please vote and tell others to do so as well. It is what we are all about.

Dick Wentura, proclaiming that he has a no trade clause, began the Pledge of Allegiance. Good to know that Dick. For those who don't read this diatribe you have no idea what that was about. The literate membership understood it.

Bruce Broemmel handled the tail twisting duties and told a Tree Grows in San Francisco story. Then he made the mistake of giving up the microphone to Sonny Christner and Rich Zeidler to enter this week's joke fest. Bad idea since the jokes went from OK to bad to worse.

Chuck Venvertloh hobbled into the meeting on crutches after tearing his ACL. Looks like a 6 month rehab for Chuck. Heres to a speedy recovery for Chuck. In his inability to be mobile, Brian Koch stepped up for Chuck and handled the card draw which was done by Bob Hays. Bob selected a 3 of hearts so the pot of $667 continues to climb. Guess we will be seeing previously unseen members returning in the weeks ahead.

President Perry Terwelp complemented J.J.'s Cafe for their first post Lenten lunch. I don't know about you but the tenderloin on my plate was so huge it looked like a first baseman's mitt (not complaining at all).

Dave Rees announced that this Friday is the last day the Club will accept nominations for the Golden Deeds Award. That awards luncheon will be held on Friday, May 10th. Don't miss that one.

Dave Poland reminded us to mark our calendars!! The Dogwood Parade is May 4th and we need Exchangites to hand out flags along the parade route. For new members, this is a great chance to put a smile on a kid's face! As usual, we will have scouts carry our big flag while we follow behind handing out flags. Bring your kids and grandkids to help out. This is one event that doesn't require any effort other than walking down Maine Street. If you have any questions, get a hold of Dave Poland

Line of the Week

Since I didn't hear one worthy from the group I will use one from my table. We were discussing roller skating as we knew it as kids and just how popular it was back then when Mel Dillman mentioned he would go skating if he could come up with the money to go to the roller rink. Dave Rees countered with the comment that he never roller skated as a kid to which Mel replied "that's right rich kids never did go roller skating". That led to Dave's replay of "that's right, we had people skate for us"
