2013 All American Kids .

The All-American Kids were honored. The award program recognizes students up to age 14 who have excelled in one of three interest areas. Four students were honored. The program was launched in 1983 by the Quincy Society of Fine Arts.

Amanda Zehnle received recognition for her athletic abilities. Amanda is a daughter of Greg and Melanie Zehnle. She's an eighth-grade student at Liberty Junior High School.

Drew Klauser earned praise for his accomplishments in the math and natural science fields. Drew, a son of Todd and Kelly Klauser, is an eighth-grade honor student at St. Dominic School in Quincy.

Ratayia Bias and Abby Biswell were both honored for their musical abilities with the arts and humanities award. Ratayia is the youngest local student to receive the All-American Kid Award. She is the 8-year-old daughter of Heather Altgilbers and Richard Bias. The third-grade honor student at Berrian School in Quincy is a gifted singer. Abby, a daughter of Matt and Lori Biswell, is an eighth-grade student at Quincy Junior High School.

Each winner will receive $200 toward their education fund and a commemorative plaque from Bank of Quincy. Bank of Quincy and the Quincy Society of Fine Arts sponsored the award this year. School Board member Bill Daniels read the introductions of each student who was honored.

Student of the Month
Gabe Nytes
Gabe Nytes

Gabe Nytes was honored as the Student of the Month. This is the 27th year of the Student of the Month promotion. Gabe attends Quincy Notre Dame. His parents are Bob and Bonnie. He has a 4.0 GPA and recently scored a 31 on the ACT. He was introduced by principal Mark McDowell. He is involved in band and chorus, serving as senior drum major and earning a spot on the all-state chorus as a junior and as a senior. He is the chair of this year's senior class portion of the school's annual fund drive. He also has participated in local blood drives, St. Anthony's youth group and Vacation Bible School.

After receiving his award, Gabe said, "When I went to QND as a freshman, I was an introvert. I've learned to use the talents that God gave me." He says he's looking at Millikin and Augustana for college next year.

This & That

Eldon Townsend had the winning ticket in the 50-50 raffle. However, he drew the 6 of diamonds. The pot grew to ... Oh, whatever the hell Chuck makes up. Does anybody really know?

Jared Haugh led the club in prayer. Mike McLaughlin actually got out the words "I pledge" before the rest of the group caught up in the pledge of allegiance. Has anyone ever considered just having the president utter the word "I" to start the pledge each week?

A Board meeting was held at 11:45 am Monday at the Pier. Just in case you thought you wanted to go. Which you can't. You've already missed it.

President Perry Terwelp noted that Jeff Dorsey, who normally puts together this newsletter, was in Florida at Spring Training. When it was announced that the Cardinals beat Dorsey's beloved Yankees 7-6 during the Big Dog's visit, it was followed by a round of applause.

As the meeting broke up, Jared Haugh quickly reminded everybody that the Burger Bash social is set for Wednesday, March 20 at Cedar Crest Country Club. Sign-up sheets will be available at Friday's meeting.

Our thoughts and prayers go to Steve Labs and his family on the loss of Arthur Labs, Steve's uncle who passed away earlier this week.

Also: Here is your Big Dog invitation to come watch the 27th Annual St. Patrick's Parade this Saturday at 11am from 12th to 5th on Maine Street.
