Friday Last
Mayor John Spring presented his State of the City address with his introduction handled by President Perry Terwelp. Before beginning the address the Mayor, who has been a member of the Exchange Club for over 30 years, complemented the snow removal crews and the Quincy Police Department as well for their efforts in handling our recent snow storm. As part of his prepared comments, the Mayor stated he wants to keep the city moving forward and one way to accomplish that is to upgrade the technology needed to do so. He mentioned a new user friendly web page will be up and running for the city next month and that the addition of iPads for the City Council has helped with communications between members, City Hall and their constituents. Mayor Spring also thanked his department heads of which many were in attendance. He stated that the city's biggest accomplishment has been its handling of finances and the continued safety of its citizens. The city has had a balanced budget for the last 8 years according to Spring and the city also has a reserve fund despite the economy of the past few years. One of his objectives is to protect municipal revenues from going to the State of Illinois. The Mayor talked about the economy, public safety, education, infrastructure, transportation, and the challenges ahead. One of those challenges will be to find funding to build a new bridge over the Mississippi River to replace an aging Bayview Bridge.

This & That
The meeting began with a rousing prayer from Jared Haugh followed by Doug Reed's memorable "I" to begin the Pledge of Allegiance. Doug had no problem remembering the start because it reminded him of all his test scores in high school ("I" for incomplete).
Jared Haugh announced that the Burger Bash (minus burgers this year????) will be prepared by Dan Veihl and Tim Wiewel. The event will be on Wednesday, March 20th at Cedar Crest Country Club so look for signup sheets beginning soon. (Notice the date is 3/20 not 3/22 as I mentioned last week). Also the Exchange Club Golf Outing is set for Friday, June 21st at Spring Lake Country Club. (Please notice that the date is 6/21 not 6/22 as I mentioned last week....Good grief, did I get anything right last week?).
Gary Peters suggested that the Club draft a letter to the Quincy Park Board to suggest the name of their new park be that of William "Bill" Klingner, a long time member of the Exchange Club. The Club agreed and Cullen Duke will draft the letter and President Perry Terwelp will sign it and sent it to the Park Board for consideration.
President Terwelp held a second reading for three new members - Mike Young (proposed by Dan Niemann), Steve Eckert (proposed by Bob Hays) and Gary Farha (proposed by Kirk Frageman). All three were accepted and will be welcomed as new members . |
