Club Meets at Noon each Friday at America's Best Value Inn
This Friday

Rick HummelIt was supposed to be our annual "Hot Stove" baseball meeting featuring former Quincy High School graduate Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Due to the death of Hall of Famer Stan Musial and his visitation and funeral set for this weekend, Rick will be unable to join us. At this writing, the replacement speaker is still that famous TBA, but come on down and enjoy Quincy's finest hour - we're sure to have a pinch-hitter for Rick.

Conover

Last Friday we were updated about the Great River Economic Development Foundation by Phil Conover, the interim director. Phil retired a few years ago to be interim director of "the world" having stepped in to help in several locations locally including currently at GREDF. Phil even joked about having a degree in Interim-ology which according to Phil means a person who is "neither here nor there".

Was it me or did it seem like maybe the best person for the job is actually Phil? Mayor John Spring, who provided the introduction, actually hinted about that as well.

Phil explained that one of the most asked questions he has been getting is just what do you do? He explained that he reviews the assets of the city and the county of which there are many. He listed the main ones being good infrastructure, quality of life, great people, and educational opportunities.

A major part of his job deals with company and job retention. The area has over 100 manufacturing companies which comprise 18% of the workforce. Normally an area of this size would see that percentage be about 12% as compared to 11% nationally. So this area is ahead of the curve with those numbers. One of the major concerns is the lack of a skilled workforce to fill the jobs that are out there.

Right now there are 25 trucking companies with 1100 drivers in the area. The demand right now is far exceeding the supply as some 1700 drivers are needed to fill the opportunities that currently exist. GREDF is currently working with our local learning institutions to train people for the future positions that will be needed to be filled.

According to Phil, almost 40% of the workforce will be retiring in the next 8 to 10 years and those jobs will need to be filled. Technology will replace some, but the possibility of importing workers is being discussed now to remedy that potential problem. Phil wrapped up his comments with the four things he tries to live by. One being to develop a strong work ethic and two being to treat people the right way. Three is to keep yourself morally strong and four is appreciate what you have. Four great things we all could live by. Thanks Phil for a great program.

This & That

Reverend Ron Fritts, who is retiring as Minister of Unity Church, performed the prayer flawlessly as usual (did I just say that?)

Kevin O'Donnell with a robust "I" got the Pledge of Allegiance started.

Jared Haugh had the honors of tail twisting the flock and handled it with his usual humor and eloquence. He even asked Joe Bocke, recently seen out after 9pm in a local establishment, if the Sunset Home bus broke down? He also charged sweater vest wearing members to pay up again. Thank God!

Chuck Venvertloh directed the 50-50 drawing with Doug Reed getting the opportunity to draw a card which turned out to be the 4 of Hearts. I did not hear how much the pot has in it. That depends on whether Mr. Venvertloh took his wife out to dinner last week or not. The pot was around $385 last week so maybe over $400 this Friday.

President Perry Terwelp began the meeting mentioning a change in major media sponsorship for Gus Macker from KHQA to WGEM this May. The sponsorship committee is still working on a couple of other potential major sponsors.

Perry thanked Dan Selby for his chairing of the Abundance Exchange event.

President Terwelp also acknowledged that the Exchange Club was represented at the Friends of the Trails Luncheon by Perry, Cullan Duke and Dan Brink. The Club has committed $1,000 for the next three years to their fundraising campaign which has climbed to $350 thousand so far.

The Exchange Club also received a nice thank you note from Miss America contestant and Miss Illinois, Megan Ervin, for the club's well wishes for her in Las Vegas. According to Perry, Megan also thanked Jeff Dorsey for "being so supportive".

Again a reminder that with Rick Hummel visiting us on the 25th, please let me know if you plan on bringing a guest to the popular "Hot Stove" meeting so we can let the folks at JJ's know of the addition food that will be needed that day.The media and the coaches have all been invited already so an additional truckload will be prepared just for them.

Belongs to Tail Twister Jared Haugh who, after looking at Rick Gengenbacher's peach sweater vest, commented that

 - "the last time he saw something like that it was at a strip club and it cost him a dollar that day too"
