Firefighter 2012The Exchange Club hosted the 4th Annual Fire Fighter of the Year Award, a brainchild of our very own Kevin Curran. It is an award presented each year in October which is Fire Prevention Month. The previous winners were: Captain Tom Bentley of the QFD in 2009, Assistant Chief Darren Smith of the Tri Township Fire Department in 2010 and Lt. Dennis Behl of the QFD in 2011. Fire fighters from the Quincy Fire Department and the Tri-Township Fire Department were on hand to watch a video produced by WGEM which reviewed the horrific fire last January in which Baby Ella was severely burned and the long recovery period that has followed for her. At least two times in the video Chief Joe Henning mentioned that had it not been the quick work of Firefighters Lt. Eric Becks and Justin Twaddle the outcome for baby Ella would have been much different. For their efforts they were both name co-recipients of the Quincy Exchange Club's Fire Fighter of the Year Award. . Thanks to the committee for their efforts in putting this program on. The committee includes Carlos Fernandez, Hal Broadwater, Kevin Curran, Steve Green and Jim Benz

This & That

The prayer was given by Brother Ed Arambasich and followed by the Pledge started by Mayor John Spring. The Terwelp Brothers, Perry and Paul, handled the tail twisting honors with Perry performing a monolog of fire fighter jokes while Paul collected money in a fire fighters boot.

Please make sure you either attend the November board meeting or express your opinion to one of the board members on the new proposal presented by Dennis Koch for the Smoke on the River event for next year. The vote to either accept the proposal or decline it will come at the board meeting on November 12th. Jim Benz recapped the Tin Dusters weekend with information that 831 cars (1948 or older) were a part of the event which raised $15,000 for Camp Callahan.

President Perry Terwelp thanked Dennis for his work on the new proposal for Smoke on the River. He also announced that the Spousal Christmas Party will be held on Friday, December 21st at the Holiday Inn. He also announced the Club received a nice thank you note from Miss Illinois, Megan Irvin including a special thank you to Jeff Dorsey (oh, that's me!).

Mike Brennan had the winning ticket. He then drew a joker and followed that with a 5 of Diamonds in the card draw. So the pot grows.

Ron Fritts has secured the Oakley Lindsay Center as the location for the Club's Abundance Exchange Event which will be held on December 7th and 8th. Volunteers will be needed with Dan Selby as the contact person.

Charlie Ledbetter has reported that November 30th will be the date for the Give a Kid a Chance Foster Kids/Parents Dinner at the Quincy Senior Center.

Mel Dillman is handling the Veteran's Program on November 9th. He is looking to invite veterans to the program. If you would like to invite a veteran, please e-mail Mel so he can recognize them at the meeting.

We had a slew of guests which included: WGEM"s Jenny Dreasler and Ray Boone. Alan Musholt, a prospective member and guest of Chuck Venvertloh. Cory Watson, a guest of Dick Wentura. And Don O'Brien, Steve Eighinger (Baby Ella's Grandfather), Phil Carlson, Melissa Klauda and Elvis Cain (Baby Ella's father). All were guests of David Adam.

Thoughts go out to Kevin Curran and his family with the loss of Kevin's sister-in law last week.

Congratulations to Tony Nutt (our next Gus Macker Chairman) on becoming a new grandpa.

Your Response Needed!

Let the Board know what you think on Smoke on the River.

The Board members e-mail addresses are linked to their names above. Simply click on one of their names and send them an e-mail with your thoughts. It's a great opportunity for the club to do more for our community - but we need your help! Whether you are "fer" it or "agin" it, please let them know. Apathy will be interpreted as being against the proposal.

The Board must make a decision at the November meeting, as our application to KCBS has to be in by December 1.

Thanks for your help!
