Friday Last
Very interesting presentation by Greg Hillebrenner, brother of our very own Gary Hillebrenner, who provided the introduction and didn't even have to look at his notes to remember our speaker's name. Greg is a Civil Engineer who is currently working on the development of the third set of locks in the Panama Canal. The $5.25 billion expansion in Panama is going to allow the larger ships of the world to pass through Panama. This new lock will feature rolling locks to allow some 48 million gallons of water to be utilized to get these large ships from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. An interesting fact revealed was that these ships must pay up from 200 to 300 thousand dollars to be allowed to pass through. The higher the payment, the higher the ship shows up on the pass through list. Also, the captain/pilots of these vessels must allow Panama Canal Authority Pilots to navigate these ships from entry to exit at which point they will give control back to the original captain/pilot. The development of the 3rd set of locks has been hindered by daily rains, high humidity and even crocodiles at times. A little history on the canal shows it was first attempted to be built by the French but that attempt failed. The United States then made the attempt and was successful with the opening of the canal in 1914. A treaty was signed between the U.S. and Panama in 1977 handing the Canal back to Panama which officially took place in 1999. For more information you can go to www.pancanal.com. If you weren't there you missed a great presentation.

This & That
Mayor John Spring led us in prayer asking for God to help the Cardinals in game five but no mention of divine intervention for the New York Yankees. What gives? Paul Terwelp practiced all night with his brother to get the start of the pledge going. Rick Gengenbacher, with some reluctance, handled the tail twisting chores filling in for Bruce Broemmel who is now convalescing at home watching Jerry Springer re-runs after his recent hip surgery.
We had several guests Friday including our speaker's father, Don Hillebrenner. Mike Klingner was the guest of Eric Barnes and Mike Eden was a guest of Jim Benz. Mike runs an orphanage in Texas. Mel Dillman is getting things lined up for the veteran's Program on November 9th. He is looking to invite veterans to the program. If you would like to invite a veteran, please e-mail Mel so he can recognize them at the meeting.
Jim Benz invited everyone to attend this weekend's Tin Dusters Convention in Quincy. There will be some 900 Tin Dusters attending which equates to some 800 thousand to a million dollars which will be infused into the economy. Dan Neimann reminded everyone about this Saturday's Battle of the Bags for Quanada. That fun event (including beer) will be at the Machinist Hall in Quincy.
President Perry Terwelp advised the membership that the Board approved a $1500+ expenditure to have Eric Thomas set up and handle the Club's web page. The Board also approved a 3 year- $1000 a year donation to the Friends of the Trails organization. Perry also enlightened the club to Dennis Koch's proposal to make some changes to Smoke on the River. Dennis' proposal was tabled at the board meeting to allow time for members to review the entire plan. All members were invited to attend the next board meeting when the board takes up the suggestions by Dennis. That meeting is set for November 12th at 11:45 at the Pier Restaurant. The Board also made a donation of $100 to the Veteran's Parade Committee. Joe Bocke had the winning ticket for the 50/50 Card Draw worth a whopping $200. Look out Brian Musholt may start coming to the meetings again. Joe drew a 3 of spades so the pot grows. Guess I shouldn't say "pot grows" with the Chief of Police and the County Sheriff being in the club. |

Quote of the Week
Complements of Jim Benz and Art Awerkamp. After Mel Dillman heard that Jim's guest, Mike Eden, ran an orphanage, he asked if Mike had room for a couple of kids. Jim replied
"yes, but not enough room for you Mel".
After hearing that Eric Thomas was being paid to do the Club's web page and realizing Eric and Kathryn Thomas' anniversary was coming up, Art said
"now you finally got enough money to buy her something nice". |
