AHYA Board of Director's Meeting Overview

The AHYA board had a very successful meeting this last weekend. We started the weekend with a fun trip to Colorado Springs to visit the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and then fed some Giraffes at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.  Then on Saturday we got down to business and discussed some of the more important details for the year.  Here are the highlights:

  • This year there will be AHYA committee meetings taking place before and after AHYA Convention, be sure to attend those meetings that interest you
  • During the Welcome Party AHYA will be hosting an Olympic Challenge - get together a team of 4-6 people that represent at least 2 different regions and compete in an Obstacle Course, String Challenge, and Tug-O-War
  • The Parade of Regions will have some great new prizes!!
  • NEW - College Day where you can come check out what equestrian related colleges might be out there for you to choose from
  • NEW - Patriotic Day! Wear your Patriotic colors
  • Donate to the new MONEY WALL at Youth Nationals where all proceeds will go to Make A Wish in the name of Ryan Melendez.
If you have any questions of just want to know how to get more involved in AHYA, you can reach out to your Regional Youth Coordinator or email us.

May is Arabian Horse Month - What Are You Doing to Celebrate?
May is the month of the Arabian horse and the Arabian Horse Association is CHALLENGING YOU to get involved in an outreach event that showcases and brings awareness to the Arabian horse breed. If you, your club, or you and a group of Arabian horse enthusiasts need outreach ideas, take a look at our Marketing Toolkit. Find this information and more here. Make sure to use #ArabianHorseMonth so we can see what you are up to for the Arabian horse month!

Need more inspiration? AHA staff members are jumping on board to educate the public about the Arabian horse during the month of May by participating in some creative events.
  • Creating a team to participate in a local fundraising walk for homeless horses
  • Volunteering at a local children's hospital and introducing the Arabian horse through fun activities to the kids and their parents. There will also be a real life Arabian horse jockey for the kids to take pictures with!
  • Partnering with a local open horse show to bring awareness to the Arabian horse breed at the show. An Arabian horse exhibition class will be featured to show the versatility of the Arabian horse.

USEF Lettering Program

Interested in lettering as a high school athlete? Have horses always taken up all your time, so you have never been able to commit to volleyball or football, soccer or tennis? Well Equestrians are athletes too and the USEF has a letter program catered to those Equestrian Athletes that spend their time at the barn instead of in the gym or on the sports field. If you are interested, check out the program here and see what USEF has to offer.

Meet a Member!
My name is Katherine McLeod Tate.

How old are you?
I am 19 years old

Where do you go to school?
I am a freshman at the University of Louisville.

Why do you love Arabian horses?
I love Arabian horses because of their versatility and commitment. They-re such an intelligent and willing breed. They have such a unique beauty about them that no other breed has.

What is your most memorable horse experience?
My most memorable experience was when I was going to watch nationals when it was still in Louisville. I was instead surprised with my first Arabian horse! My parents bought her in secret and surprised me with her at the show grounds.

What do you aspire to do in the future?
I aspire to have a career in the medical field and to continue to show and own horses.

If you could change one thing about the horse world, what would it be?
I want to change how Arabian horses are advertised to the public. Overall we are not well known to people outside the horse world. We need more shows like the Arabian Celebration that really showcase the breed to the public, as well as make the show exciting for exhibitors.

It is so great to see the Equestrian community come together! This month we were moved by #RideForOlivia

When the news that 17-year-old Australian event rider Olivia Inglis had been killed in a rotational fall on the cross-country course at the Scone Horse Trials in New South Wales, Australia, reached fellow Australian horsewoman Lisa Purcell, she found herself in a position many friends and family members often encounter when someone close to them experiences a sudden tragedy. read more
Famous Arabian Horses
Check out the latest blog post from AHYA Region 3 Youth Director Kailey Wessel:

Arabian horses have been getting plenty of attention in the news and social media lately! The first was Lady Gaga, if you can believe it! Like all of us, even this extravagant celebrity was wishing for a "pony" for Christmas, and her wish finally came true when she received a beautiful Arabian mare from her record label! She has since posted a multitude of pictures on her social media pages, adoring her Arabian! read more
