Tierra Del Norte Arabian Horse Association and Desert Horse Association have combined their clubs together and are now known as San Diego Arabian Horse Association. We basically brought the two clubs back together as they originally were and since most of our members are located in San Diego County decided that the new name more reflected who we were. We are open to new members who are horse lovers and want to actively participate in all sorts of horse activities from shows, to clinics, to trail rides, to social events and everything in between. We also want to thank all of our exhibitors that have supported our show Fiesta Del Mar through the years. Unfortunately we have had to put this dhow to bed for good. I have been involved with this show since its inception and have very fond and good memories of the show. Our club San Diego Arabian Horse Association will be putting on smaller shows with the hope of attracting more people outside the clubs to participate and then of course join our club.

For more information on all the events and activities going on at San Diego Arabian Horse Association please contact Mimi Gaffey or Theresa Oakley.

Region 5
AHA Region 5 Northwest Equefest
Region 5 has been holding mini conventions for years. The last one was in 2006, however this year, after nearly a ten year hiatus, we put a spin on it. For 2015 we called it Northwest EquestFest. It was held in Bellevue on January 9th at the Courtyard By Marriott. This event brought 10 lectures on various equine topics to the community for free. Speakers included LMF feed, two veterinarians and a farrier who discussed lameness, understanding the hoof and dentistry, local trainers/judges who discussed equitation, equine insurance, equine law, sport horse trends, the art of clipping, how to become a judge with our state B system as well as how to become judge/steward with AHA which was presented by Stan Morey, and much more!

Multiple sponsors, including a goody bag by Reber Ranch and vendor room sponsor Crescita Capital. Lunch brought a fashion show sponsored by local realtor Rich Watson, featured attire from many of our vendors including fun ideas of what to wear to the barn for practice along with trends in all the Arabian classes. We pulled in not only Arabian members but other breed competitors,4-H members, Pony Club, and people just starting out with horses. We had an AHA booth displaying pictures of our versatile horses competing in all the classes. Tables of donated silent auction items from local and national businesses.

We wrapped this event up with our inaugural Region 5 awards banquet. Initially hoping to sell 90 tickets to the event, we ended up having to open a second room with a total of 140 attendees. Awards were given out to the winners of the Arabian Region 5 High Point Program. Each Champion received a perpetual trophy, blanket bag donated by Schneidrs and Champion ribbon, Reserve Champion received a garment bag, ribbon and then we gave awards out through eight place. The winners of the Open High Point Program also received their awards that night. The open program recognizes people that show their Arabians in open shows. We also have two special awards: a Youth and an Adult Volunteer of the Year award; Recipients were McKenzie Miller and Lenora Callahan and Sportsmanship awards recipients were Cristi Knittle and Maddy Knittle. We had a wonderful Master of Ceremonies to keep the night going. In addition we were able to get Cynthia Richardson to attend and discuss "The State of the Association," and Stan Morey give a report on the Judges and Stewart Commission.

The highlight of the night might have been Ron Copple Jr. talking about his involvement with the Arabian Horsemen's Distress Fund. This introduced the organization to everyone and gave our attendees the chance raise money for a wonderful cause. Our AHDF Cake Auction raised $3,359.01. Additionally our silent auction items raised $1,420 for the Region 5 Youth and $1,581 that will be split between the AHDF, Region 5 Youth, and a local therapeutic riding center Little Bit.

A huge thanks to all those who attended, sponsored, and presented. And our amazing master of ceremonies Ian Sage!

This event would not have been possible without the wonderful committee of: Michelle Pease-Paulsen, Carrie Olson, Shannon, Bedell, Erika Snell, Joyce Thomas, and Pat Hough.

We also want to thank Coral Link Photography for taking such wonderful photos. Coral is in the process of editing photos and will post them to her site when completed. We will be sure to update everyone via the Region 5 website and Facebook when these images are up.

What a wonderful start to the 2016 season. We ask that you save a tentative date of January 7, 2017 for the next event.

The region 5 website and Facebook will be updated shortly with highlights of the evening.

Who's going to Scottsdale?
In order to create more press and photo opportunities for the Region, I would like to know who is going to Scottsdale. Shannon or I will work with Coral to shoot some pics, and do a short interview in order to highlight our riders on the Region 5 website.  We are looking for Youth and Amateurs.

NEWS FROM the OVAHA C.O.M.M.I.T. Scholarship Program
This is Sydney Rose, and I told you I would be sending you a promo piece for the C.O.M.M.I.T. scholarship program, so here it is:

My dream always was to show horses, however expenses made the chances of achieving that dream very dim. Thanks to OVAHA offering the C.O.M.M.I.T. scholarship, I was able to achieve this dream of mine. Last summer I was able to attend Class A shows for the first time and it was an experience I'll never forget! The Summer Sizzler put on by OVAHA was also a wonderful experience. Volunteering to work allowed me to meet new people and learn a lot!

Thanks to the scholarship, I was able to show two extra classes, coming home with Western Dressage champion and Unanimous first place Purebred Hunter Pleasure JTR and lots of ribbons with the amazing mare that I had the pleasure of showing and bonding with, Katy (AM Shining Capella+). I wouldn't have been able to achieve any of this without the help of OVAHA and the C.O.M.M.I.T. scholarship, my trainer, Mary Loden, and her wonderful clients for allowing me to show their talented horses. I would suggest this scholarship opportunity to any youth dreaming to get into the show industry! OVAHA is kind enough to really work with the youth and teach them the ways of the Arabian showing industry.

And I've also attached two pictures from my showing experience, the first is of Katy and me at SAHIBA where we won Supreme champion PB SHIH overall. And the second is my winning ride at the Sizzler on Katy in the PB Hunter Pleasure JTR, winning first unanimously. Thank you very much for this opportunity and all the help!

DEVASTATING BARN FIRE DESTROYS ARABIAN HORSES
A quiet winter's night on January 14th was interrupted by an explosion and fire at the farm owned by Doris & Rob Woolner of Mount Forest in Ontario, Canada. Despite efforts by the owners, a total of twelve horses owned by the Woolners and Derek Jones were victims, only one gelding owned by Derek was rescued and is currently under veterinary care.  Horses include their multi-champions as well as all broodmares and 2015 foals sired by Trussardi. Over 50 firefighters from the local communities were onsite, however, by the time they arrived the barn was fully engulfed and had partially collapsed. They continued to work throughout the night to contain the flames from spreading to the house and other buildings on the property. The Woolners suffered health issues, one was hospitalized and released the following day.  The fire is currently under investigation.

All members of the Arabian horse community are saddened and shocked by this tragedy. To financially assist the owners, a Fire Relief Fund is in the process of being established through the TD Bank. In the meantime, anyone wanting to donate may contact Allan Ehrlick: 905-854-0762

On behalf of Doris, Rob & Derek - thank you very much for caring, and assisting your fellow Arabian horse owners in their time of need.
