AHYA at AYHC!
AHYA President Camille Waechter and Vice President Tori Oto recently attended the American Youth Horse Council (AYHC) Symposium in Hartford, Conn. There, they got to meet youth from 4-H and FFA groups, the National Reining Horse Youth Association,
American Quarter Horse Youth Association, and more. They participated in seminars covering topics from cowboy ethics to body condition scoring to demonstrations of mounted polo and dressage tests! It was a wonderful opportunity to meet and learn from other youth in the horse industry, and the girls had a wonderful time. Keep an eye on the AHYA Blog for an update from Camille and Tori soon!
AHA staff members Hilary Nixon, Communications Specialist, and Shawna Strickland, Youth & Family Programs Director, also attended the Symposium. They had the chance to meet Olympian Peter Leone at Lionshare Farms, his boarding, breeding, and training facility.
The tour day also included a stop at High Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center and Whitney Ridge Quarter Horses, where they watched demonstrations of therapeutic riding lessons and jumping work. In addition, Shawna was elected to the AYHC Board of Directors for a 2-year term; in this role, she will help develop and update educational resources and provide assistance as needed for events.
AHYA was proud to serve as a Platinum Sponsor for the 2013 Symposium, helping to make the arena demonstrations at the
University of Connecticut (UConn) possible. We look forward to continuing our sponsorship and participation in 2014! Next year's Symposium will be hosted in Minneapolis, Minn. and will include tours of Cedar Ridge Arabians and Ames Percherons. AHYA is working on proposing topics for seminars, including one for the youth audience about how to run a successful fundraiser. We know that you all do an amazing job raising funds to support your youth activities - we'd love to hear any fundraising tips you may have! Send them to youth@arabianhorses.org by May 3!
If you missed it, be sure to check out Episode 2 of the AHA Moment, AHA's informational video series. It's got all the info you need to know about AYHC and AHYA!
