DID YOU KNOW. . .
#1 . . .  New NELLCO President Takes the Helm on July 1?

Raquel M. Ortiz (Assistant Dean for Library and Information Services & Associate Professor of Law, Roger Williams University School of Law) will assume the Presidency of NELLCO effective July 1, 2016. Raquel has served since 2014 as Vice-President under Sarah Hooke Lee (Northeastern University School of Law). Sarah will serve one additional year on the NELLCO Executive Committee as Immediate Past-President, where she is joined by Darcy Kirk (Treasurer; University of Connecticut)) and Pat Newcombe (VP/PE; Western New England University School of Law) as well as Tracy L. Thompson (Executive Director; NELLCO).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is an exciting time to be a NELLCO member and a bit intimidating to be its President during this time.  Since I was elected two years ago, many changes have continued to propel NELLCO forward as prime example of the power of collaboration.  NELLCO has joined forces with LIPA and MALLCO to leverage our collective leadership for the benefit of our members.  PALMPrint, a collaboration with LIPA, has moved from pilot project to a continuing endeavor.  The ALLStAR benchmarking project has developed from a collaboration between a few libraries to a robust product that many law libraries will be able to explore. ALLStAR will aid participating libraries in their efforts to assess their operations and to more easily meet expanding reporting obligations during a time when we are doing more with less.  The annual Symposium continues to inspire participants and to provide opportunities for deep collaboration among the librarians at our member institutions.

NELLCO's leadership has also changed significantly in the last few years.  Since my first board meeting as a guest in spring 2011, 11 out of the 23 member libraries have new directors.  Last summer I had the opportunity to work with Sarah Hooke Lee, my predecessor as NELLCO President, to draft a continuity plan that incorporates the knowledge and work of previous board members and our Executive Director.  The finished plan, now in place, will help us quickly onboard new board members so that they can efficiently fulfill their responsibilities and get up to speed in the ongoing affairs of NELLCO.

In the next two years, I will be leading an organization that predates my life as a law librarian by many years, has thrived thanks to the hard work of many before me, and has a track record for excellence among library consortia.  For this reason, I am excited about our forthcoming Board of Directors retreat in the fall, at which we will work on the question: what's next for NELLCO?  I don't have an agenda or vision for NELLCO, other than continuing to do great things for the benefit of our member libraries.  However, I know the board retreat will result in great actionable ideas that merge the wisdom, progressive thinking, different institutional perspectives, and the innovative spirit of our board members.  As NELLCO President, I will do everything in my power to ensure that these great ideas move forward and become the projects that will continue to earn NELLCO accolades in the years to come.

I look forward to seeing many of you at AALL this summer and feel free to send me your thoughts about NELLCO. ~ Raquel M. Ortiz
