New Year News
First things first. Theresa McCue welcomed a granddaughter over the holiday break! Her daughter Kayleigh and son-in-law Pat Fisher are the proud parents of Rowan, pictured below. Pat serves in the U.S. Navy and is currently stationed in VA. Since returning from her visit to welcome Rowan to the world, Theresa has become an avid Skype user so she can keep close tabs on the new family. Congratulations, Theresa and family!

There's just no smooth transition from that joyous news to an update about the NELLCO Deans & Directors event held earlier this month during AALS in NYC. That was the week of wild and wicked weather that I'm sure many of you experienced. Travel across the country ground to a halt as snow flew, then temperatures plummeted to sub-zero lows not seen in over 40 years. Despite the 'polar vortex' that kept some away, a robust group eventually gathered at the Yale Club of New York City.
Those in attendance were:
- Marlene Alderman (BU)
- Maureen O'Rourke (BU)
- Suzanne Wones (Harvard)
- Anne Acton (NELB)
- Sarah Hooke Lee (NEU)
- Jeremy R. Paul (NEU)
- Darcy Kirk (UConn)
- Bob Nissenbaum (Fordham)
- Timothy S. Fisher (UConn)
- Sue Zago (UNH)
- Paul George (UPenn)
- Cynthia Lewis (VLS)
- Blair Kauffman (YLS)
- Kent McKeever (Columbia)
- Mike Chiorazzi (UAZ)
- Melanie Dunshee (Duke).
NELLCO President Paul George (University of Pennsylvania) facilitated a conversation about how law libraries can continue to evolve and respond to the changes occurring in legal education today. In Northeastern Dean Jeremy Paul's opening remarks he noted that while the technologies have changed, the goals for legal researchers have not; finding, managing, and using information.
Our intention was to explore non-traditional roles for libraries that support those research goals and exploit the unique set of administrative and management skills typically possessed by library staff members, as well as identify areas for potential collaboration. The NELLCO Executive Committee is slated to meet this Fri. Jan. 17 to review the results of that meeting and a more comprehensive report will be issued thereafter. Our thanks to all who defied the vortex to join us at the table!
Yours In Collaboration,
Tracy L. Thompson
Executive Director

NELLCO Symposium 2014 - Eliminate Sludge!
| |
This is the last week to get the early registration discount for the 2014 NELLCO Symposium here in Albany, March 13-14, 2014! After Fri, Jan 17, registration will increase from $200.00 to $250.00, so don't wait any longer. Of course, even at $250.00 it's the best deal around. What other 2-day conference offers so much for so little. You receive all conference materials, all meals and breaks (including dinner Thurs. evening), plus a free copy of either Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It or Why Managing Sucks and How to Fix It, both co-authored by Jody Thompson (below on the right), who will serve as our keynote speaker!
 | | Co-authors Cali Ressler (L) and Jody Thompson (R) |
Jody will share the Results Only Work Environment (ROWE) concept with us, and challenge us to think about work in 21st century terms. She'll also expose how 'sludge' may be poisoning your workplace. You won't want to miss it!

| NYTimes.com Update |
While we couldn't herd the cats to meet our anticipated Jan. 1 launch date for the NYTimes. com offer, we are still on track toward getting the subscriptions established. Thirty libraries, including some members of the Mid-America Law Libraries Consortium (MALLCO) with whom we were able to collaborate on this offer, decided to participate in this first wave of subscribers. By aggregating the FTE across these institutions we were able to bring the cost-per-FTE to $2.86.
We are currently in the final stages of exchanging all of the data that the Times and NELLCO need in order to initiate the accounts and facilitate the authentication process. All of the IP information has been conveyed to the Times for those members that chose this option. For those who chose the group option and will be providing lists of e-mail addresses of authorized users, you can e-mail your lists to me at your convenience.
The subscription term will be annual, but the initial subscription cycle may be pro-rated in order to synchronize with the academic, rather than the calendar, year. We will be billing accordingly, and the renewal date will be included on your invoice.
