Spot-On Legal Research

From the site:

This blog is brought to you by the librarians of Western New England University School of Law. We are dedicating this space to a discussion of trends and topics in legal research, from quick tips to structuring complex research plans.

Does your staff need grantwriting skills? As a NELLCO member you can get them for free!

NELLCO member libraries that can host a 2-day grant writing or grant management workshop will receive two free seats for staff to attend. That's a value of almost $1000.00!

gwusa

NELLCO has teamed up with Grant Writing USA to offer these workshops across the US. Host institutions only need to provide space and a local contact person. We do the rest. Interested? Let us know!

Bepress is pleased to announce a new portal for open-access legal scholarship: the Law Review Commons. - So long, Seattle

- Fastcase 50!

- Marnie Warner Retires

- Planning to Succeed

Well, that was fun! Summer is a distant memory already, and Seattle is just a speck in our rearview mirrors. But we had a great turnout for our 30th Anniversary Meet & Greet in Seattle. Theresa and I really enjoyed seeing everyone and celebrating this milestone. A good time was had by all. Special thanks go out to the folks at Leadership Directories for providing some financial support for the event and helping us 'envision the future!'

Fastcase50

This summer I was also honored to be selected as one of the Fastcase 50 for 2013!  I was completely gobsmacked (really, it's the only word that works here) to learn first of the nomination, then of the selection, as one of  "the law's smartest, most courageous innovators, techies, visionaries, & leaders." Who, me? I am very touched by this recognition, and as you can see from the list, I am in quite good company. Thank you, Fastcase!

Marnie Warner Retires

This summer also brought the unanticipated retirement of longstanding NELLCO Board Member Marnie Warner, of the Massachusetts Trial Court Law Libraries. Marnie's leadership has served both the Consortium and the Commonwealth for many years, and she is widely recognized as a forceful  advocate for public law libraries and those they serve. She is so well-respected that she has earned recognition by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly as one of the Top Women of Law for 2013! Marnie will be recognized for this honor at a luncheon on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. Congratulations, Marnie! We will all miss your generous spirit, and your clear vision and insightful contributions to the work of NELLCO!

Planning to Succeed

The NELLCO Board of Directors has embarked on the next strategic planning phase for the organization. At our summer meeting on July 31, the Executive Committee agreed that, given the volatile state of everything (information, the economy, libraries, etc.) it made the most sense to have a streamlined and responsive process. In order to facilitate that outcome we turned once again to Laura Freebairn-Smith of Organizational Performance Group. Laura has worked with NELLCO at different points through the years and her skill and expertise continue to be invaluable to us. (See item below about the free Managing Up breakfast workshop that OPG is hosting in Boston. If you're in the area I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity!)

Last weekend, a small planning group that included NELLCO V.P/P.E. Sarah Hooke Lee (Northeastern) and Board members Meg Hayden (MA Trial Courts), Chris Hepler (UMaine), Pat Newcombe (Western New England), Suzanne Wones (Harvard), and me, met in Salem, MA. Over the course of three days the group engaged in a scenario planning process, facilitated by Laura and supported by Laura's unflappable assistant, Carolyn McCutchan. By Sun. we had arrived at our destination. Through the process we had developed a vision for NELLCO's future, which will be further explored by the Board at our fall meeting, Oct. 17-18 at the University of Pennsylvania's Biddle Law Library. We expect to come out of that meeting with a plan document ready to share with the membership. Stay tuned!

Bepess Names IR All-Stars
Carol Watson

Carol Watson

University of Georgia Law

Each year, Bepress recognizes leaders in Institutional Repository success:

IR All-Stars spotlights four individuals who have demonstrated a unique and replicable approach to IR success.   Our goal with this annual award is to provide the IR community with the knowledge to emulate and build upon some of the most successful initiatives that we've identified in our community.  We want to provide every IR manager with the means to become an IR All-Star, too.

Among the 2013 All-Stars is Carol Watson, Director of the Law Library at the University of Georgia School of Law! Carol, an early IR innovator, is largely responsible for the success of Georgia Law's Digital Commons implementation. Congratulations, Carol!
Programs of Interest
Two upcoming programs caught my eye: Taking the Library Back from Google, on Sept. 18th, presented by Abe Lederman, founder of Deep Web Technologies, and hosted by EOS International, and Digging Into Databases on Sept. 12th, with Marshall Breeding on ALA's American Libraries Live broadcast. Both are free but registration is required.
Interested in Managing Up? Attend this Free Workshop in Boston.
Organizational Performance Group (OPG) invites NELLCO members to a complimentary breakfast workshop on Thur. Oct. 24 from 8:00-10:00 am. Attendees will gain insight into 'managing up.' The location (Beacon Hill area), directions and parking information will be provided upon registration.

Managing Up is about building effective relationships between employees and their supervisors. Whether you are a staff member, middle manager, or upper-level leader, the skills taught in this program apply to all. As a subordinate, it is about creating relevance and impact; as a manager, it is about creating an environment where your employees feel comfortable, safe and supported in contributing to the success of the organization.

Please email Rachelle Zaretzky at rzaretzky@orgpg.com to register you and your guests. This breakfast has limited capacity so we encourage you to register early.

Sept. is National Preparedness Month!

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has sponsored National Preparedness Month for the past 10 years. They offer a preparedness month toolkit that organizations can use to help them plan events and promote the month. From the FEMA website:

Preparedness is a year round activity. However, September is the month for recognizing national preparedness. The overall goal is to engage the public to make preparedness a part of their daily lives and just not for one single month. National Preparedness Month (NPM) is geared towards building awareness and encouraging Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, schools, organizations, businesses, and places of worship. NPM is managed and sponsored by FEMA's Ready Campaign. The Ready Campaign works closely with Citizen Corps and National Preparedness Community (NPC) members to increase emergency preparedness awareness and activities across the nation and to ensure the rollout of NPM events.
