- Come Help Us Celebrate 30 Years!

Remember the last time AALL Annual Meeting was in Seattle? It was 2003 and NELLCO was commemorating 20 years of collaboration. I couldn't have imagined then that I'd still be at the helm a decade later, and would see us marking 30 years! It's very exciting and gratifying to have been along for the ride that has brought us to where we are today, with more than 120 members in 4 countries!

Please join us in Seattle again, this time for our 30th Anniversary Celebration and Reception on Sun. July 14 from 6:00-9:00pm at the Library Bistro, inside the Alexis Hotel, 92 Madison St., Seattle. We are grateful to Leadership Directories, Inc. for their generous support of this event, and we hope you'll stop by their display to thank them as well. Come enjoy good food and drink! Win prizes! Be there at 6:30 to join in our champagne toast!

History lesson, history lesson. . .

We are all indebted to those librarians who, throughout the years, have had the vision for NELLCO and have pursued and supported the mission. In 1983, fifteen law library directors incorporated the New England Law Library Consortium, Inc., in Massachusetts.

FOUNDING NELLCO BOARD 1983

  1. Don Dunn at Western New England College School of Law (now Western New England University School of Law)
  2. Robert Begg at Union University Albany Law School Library (now Albany Law School)
  3. Dan Freehling at University of Maine School of Law Library
  4. W. Leslie Peat at Vermont Law School Library
  5. Judith (Norcross) Gire at Franklin Pierce Law Center Library (now University of New Hampshire School of Law)
  6. Madeleine Wilken at University of Bridgeport Law Library (now Quinnipiac University School of Law)
  7. Morris Cohen at Yale Law Library
  8. Dennis Stone at University of Connecticut School of Law Library
  9. Virginia Wise at Boston University Law Library
  10. Frank Bae at New England School of Law Library (now New England Law|Boston)
  11. Rajinder Walia at Northeastern University Law Library
  12. Edgar Bellefontaine at Social Law Library
  13. Edward Bander at Suffolk University Law Library
  14. Sharon (Hamby) O'Connor at Boston College Law Library
  15. Harry (Terry) Martin at Harvard University Law Library

As the list illustrates, there has been much change since those early days. We've lost some of these wonderful colleagues, institutions have changed names, changed leadership, and even changed cities. But all 15 of these founding libraries remain Full Members, with their current library directors serving on the NELLCO Board today. The Board now includes 10 additional Full Members, who had all joined NELLCO by 1999.

Staffing for NELLCO has evolved more slowly. In 1983, Joan Duckett, a reference librarian at the Harvard Law School Library, did double-duty as NELLCO's first, part-time Executive Director. Next in line was Martha Berglund Crane. I believe Martha started in a part-time capacity and evolved to full-time before handing over the reins to Diane Klaiber. Diane was my predecessor and mentor, and she served as Executive Director from 1995-2001.

During my tenure we have added a second staff person, which has also evolved from part-time to full-time. That position was first staffed by Tom McCorkhill as a part-time Administrative Assistant. Cindy Adams followed Tom as a full-time Administrative Assistant. Today, Theresa McCue serves full-time as NELLCO's Administrative and Member Support Manager.

Much has changed in 30 years, but the commitment to collaboration and innovation among law libraries continues to serve NELLCO members well. Please join us in Seattle to celebrate how far we have all come!

Yours In Collaboration,

Tracy L. Thompson

Executive Director

June is National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month!

On Friday, May 31, President Barack Obama issued a Proclamation recognizing June as LGBT Pride Month. He stated in part, "My Administration is a proud partner in the journey toward LGBT equality. . . And because LGBT rights are human rights, my Administration is implementing the first-ever Federal strategy to advance equality for LGBT people around the world."

From the Library of Congress website:

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States.  . . The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Social Responsibilities Special Interest Section (SR-SIS) of AALL has had a standing committee on Lesbian and Gay Issues since 1985. In addition to many other activities, the standing committee awards the Alan Holoch Memorial Grant each year to assist the recipient with Annual Meeting expenses.
