MISSION
The Hearsay blog has two main objectives: 1) to provide news on the library's activities and resources, and 2) to engage the Sturm College of Law community in the evolution of our resources for academic development. - Season's Greetings!
- NELLCO at AALS
- Register NOW for the Symposium
Happy holidays! I wish everyone health and happiness during this season of celebration and throughout the coming year. As I write this I'm tuned to my R&B/Pop Holiday Pandora Radio Station, and even though we're less that 2 weeks from Christmas (which means we've been listening to holiday music for more than a month already) I'm still enjoying the music!
I'm sure many of you are anticipating the upcoming holiday break. Theresa and I are also looking forward to the downtime. NELLCO offices will be closed from Dec. 24 through Jan. 1. We'll be back in business on Jan. 2 and look forward to continuing to serve all of you in 2013.
Immediately after we get back I'll be heading off to New Orleans for the AALS Annual Meeting. For the first time, NELLCO will be exhibiting at AALS. If you're attending please come by the exhibit area, say hi and learn more about PALMPrint. Or, if you'd like to set up a time to meet with me about anything NELLCO related, please contact me and we can set up a time.
As I reported last month, we've opened registration for NELLCO Symposium 2013: Building a Collaboration-Driven Organization, March 14-15, 2103. Earlybird registration runs through Jan. 17 and is just $175.00! Register now to get the best rate. All NELLCO members are invited to attend and we hope to be able to welcome many of you to Albany for this second annual event!
Yours In Collaboration,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki

NELLCO E-resource Update
iSinolaw / Westlaw China News - As you may know, in 2011 Westlaw China acquired iSinolaw. In the first year of the transition, iSinolaw was able to honor the agreements we had in place for their materials. Now however, we have learned that Westlaw China will not be renewing any of their existing subscriptions through NELLCO for the Dec. renewal cycle. Current subscribers will be contacted directly by Westlaw China representatives. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause for existing subscribers.
Upcoming Trials
- MoML 7:Foreign Primary Sources, 1600-1970
- DeGruyter e-book collection

Save the time of the reader! - Ranganathan's Principle #4
A Short Guide to a Happy Life - by Anna Quindlen
This is a 50-page, non-fiction, pick-me-up that I keep within arm's reach of my desk. Of course, in my office everything is within arm's reach, but this is special. Anna Quindlen, journalist and novelist, offers her insights on all those things that make life exquisite, accompanying the easy prose with black and white photos that tell their own stories. This is a 10-minute read that will make you smile (and maybe cry) and leave you with a renewed appreciation for just about everything! (And see below ) |

December is (allegedly) Read a New Book Month!
| | Reading is Fun! |
I've found lots of anecdotal evidence (here, here and here, for example) that we're celebrating Read a New Book Month in December. I haven't found the 'official' website or the Presidential Proclamation, but on this one I'm willing to wing it. I think every month should be Read a New Book Month, don't you? As librarians, I'm sure we're all well ahead of this curve and reading lots of new books each month. But Dec. gives us the chance to lure our friends and loved ones into the reading addiction. We can give books as gifts to everyone on our lists and tell them it's in recognition of Read a New Book Month!
Since there doesn't appear to be an authority for this month, I'm going to take some liberties and give some guidelines here. A 'new' book, for purposes of the month, is any book one hasn't read before (or has read but forgets). Date of publication is unimportant. Maybe a classic you missed? Book format (e- or print) is irrelevant. And new or used versions of any book qualify. Visit your local independent or used book store. Or check something out at your local library and stuff a stocking with something that can be returned to the library after the holiday! |
