The Laboratorium
by James Grimmelmann
James is Professor of Law at New York Law School where he teaches intellectual property and Internet-related subjects. - PALMPrint - At Last!!
- NELLCO Symposium 2013
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! This is my absolute favorite holiday. I love that no one is expecting cards, gifts, resolutions, colored eggs in baskets, fireworks, candy hearts, cakes with candles, or big surprises. I love the smells that permeate the house for the day, and the fact that everyone slows down, if just for a moment, to catch up. I hope you all enjoy some slow down time with your friends and family during this holiday.
One thing I'm thankful for this year is seeing PALMPrint, a shared print storage project, finally coming to fruition! Preserving America's Legal Materials in Print (PALMPrint) is a collaborative intitiative between NELLCO and the Legal Information Preservation Alliance (LIPA). LIPA's Executive Director, Margie Maes, and I have been working on this project together for well over two years and it's gratifying to see things really coming together.
PALMPrint seeks to serve as a model for collaborative preservation and access to core legal materials in print. It will be a shared, jointly owned collection of state and federal materials, housed in a central facility run by W.B. Meyer in Windsor, CT. Participating libraries will be assured access to low-use print materials when needed, and will have the freedom to make different decisions about collections and space utilization at the local level.
Both the NELLCO and LIPA Boards have approved organizational underwriting for this project at a total combined contribution of $120,000.00. The remaining cost of the 3-year project, estimated at 240,749.00, will be distributed to the participating libraries. The more participation we get across the two organizations, the lower the cost per library.
NELLCO and LIPA represent over 160 unique law library members. If every member committed to this pilot, the cost per library would be less than $500.00 per year per library! That would be a remarkable feat and an unprecedented collaboration. Please consider supporting this project through your participation so that we can all share the risks and rewards of implementing this innovative idea!
We need to secure commitments from our member libraries so that we can begin building the collection. Our first step was to hold a series of informational webinars. If you were unable to attend a live webinar please take some time to view a recorded session.
We will soon be asking you to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to indicate your intention to participate. We will establish a deadline by which all signed MOUs must be executed. After the deadline we will know the final particiapting library count and be able to provide the cost per library based on the actual number of participants.
A dedicated committee of volunteers has brought us to this point and we are grateful for their efforts on behalf of the member libraries. In addition to Margie and myself, the PALMPrint committee members are:
Melanie Dunshee (Duke)
Paul George (UPenn)
Karen Quinn (RI State)
Tory Trotta (Arizona State)
I'm also happy to report that we've opened registration for NELLCO Symposium 2013: Building a Collaboration-Driven Organization, March 14-15, 2103. All NELLCO members are invited to attend and we hope to be able to welcome many of you to Albany for this second annual event!
Yours In Collaboration,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki
Executive Director

Toronto Reference Library's Unique Pods |
In early Oct., the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) held their annual conference in Toronto. NELLCO was an exhibitor there and we were delighted to be included in the social events that were such a highlight of the meeting. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the CN Tower and watching the edgewalkers test their mettle. But as a library geek I was more enchanted by our visit to the Toronto Reference Library.
On our way into dinner at the lovely Bram and Bluma Appel Salon, we walked through a reading room area where 3 or 4 star trekish, glass capsules were apparently being installed. They looked like this:

I was really interested in finding out about these 'pods' and after returning to Albany I found TRL's facebook page and sent an inquiry. In addition to the photos, I was delighted to receive this response from Linda Mackenzie, Director Research & Reference Libraries:
Thanks for your interest in our new 'study pods.' That is what we call them. It started out as a working title when we were in the design stage and has stuck through that process to implementation. They were custom designed by Moriyama & Teshima Architects, project architects for our renovation.
In developing renovation plans for the Reference Library, we wanted to provide a range of study/work environments that responded to user needs and the way they were using today's library. We also wanted to achieve a mix of formal and informal gathering spaces. The options range from individual study areas to group study/collaboration rooms that can accommodate up to 6 or 8 people. The study pods are mid way along the continuum offering space for two people to work or study together. We wanted to achieve space for up to two people to work together in a way that wouldn't disturb those around them and would not subject them to the ambient noise in the area. I would not say that the pods are completely sound proofed but they do eliminate much of the surrounding sound and noise from inside the pods does not disturb others at nearby study tables.
The circular, glass design emerged from our objective to create attracting and attractive spaces that would meet our objectives in a way that emphasizes the fluid basic design of the building and the transparency we were trying to achieve. We did not for example want to create a row of small study rooms against a wall somewhere as we have in some of our buildings.
They were build from the architects specification by a local company called Kubik, a local firm that specializes in designing and fabricating exhibits and environments for businesses, institutions and museums. I believe they have offices in Amsterdam and New Jersey as well as Toronto. The pods are quite a complicated installation, requiring their own HVAC feed, sprinkler heads for fire suppression etc.
Our users have readily adopted them and the first five are regularly in use. They can be booked for up to 2 hours at a time. We will be adding another 10 on two other floors as renovations proceed there for a total of 15.

ACT BY NOV. 15: Consortial Acquisition of Mosio's Text a Librarian to Leverage Buying Power!
Lyrasis has announced a cross-consortial offer on Text a Librarian (TaL). Now NELLCO extends this offer to you.
TaL combines chat, email, SMS, and Web Widgets for an
all-in-one patron support software solution for libraries. TAL enables patrons to communicate with you the way they want, and lets you respond via a single, web-based dashboard.
To get the most-favored pricing on this software, the participating consortia need to bring together 100 libraries by Nov. 15. Please review the offer and let us know (via the NELLCO online store) if you wish to subscribe. The subscription period will run from 12/1-11/30 each year, and will be billed through NELLCO as always.
We're very excited about this first interconsortial effort for NELLCO, and hope other opportunities will emerge in the future.
Please be in touch if you have any questions or concerns! |

Save the time of the reader! - Ranganathan's Principle #4
Upgrade to Free - by Beth Ziesenis
Honestly, I'm not getting a cut from sales of this book. I just think every librarian should have this handy reference within reach. I can put my hands on my (signed!) copy just by swiveling my chair.
Beth, My Nerdy Best Friend, was a speaker at the NELLCO Symposium in March and she shared a lot of this information with the audience. She combs the technology landscape for free and cheap apps and then lets everyone else know. Her easy-to-read book contains 22 chapters, including such topics as personal organization, social media, meeting management, IT tools, security tools and website and blogging tools. Beth includes QR codes in the text so you can connect to the app start using it immediately. You can (and should!) follow Beth on Twitter @AskBethZ. |

November is Native American Heritage Month!
From the website:
The first American Indian Day in a state was declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of New York. Several states celebrate the fourth Friday in September. In Illinois, for example, legislators enacted such a day in 1919. Presently, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Day, but it continues to be a day we observe without any recognition as a national legal holiday.
In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 "National American Indian Heritage Month." Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including "Native American Heritage Month" and "National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month") have been issued each year since 1994. |
