Small Overhead, Big Achievements: Why YOU Should Give to the Lupus Foundation

Lupus Hugs
The Lupus Foundation of Northern California has been part of the northern California lupus DNA for 38 years. As we gear up for 2016, we're sure that you are inundated for donation requests from charities big and small. So why should you pick the Lupus Foundation of Northern California to be at the top of your list of holiday giving?

Because we don't just talk the talk. We walk the walk on patient services concentrated in the region. From education classes to support groups, from health fairs to medical conferences, from engaging Citi Councils to knocking on the doors of Congress, the LFNC never wavers in our commitment to you.

Here's a look at what we have done in 2015:
  • 96 lupus patients signed up and have been paired through the newly launched Lupus Buddy Program in just the last five months.
  • 51 individuals, including patients, nurses and loved ones attended 2 lupus mini-conferences focused on research and treatment. Although there's a registration fee for these conferences, LFNC is committed to access and never turns anyone away for the lack of funds. On average, 25-30% our attendees have their fee waived due to financial hardships.
  • 37 patients and loves ones attended 3 patient education classes - at no cost to them.
  • 6 new patient education instructors were trained by the Foundation while the material for the classes were standardized following the guidelines of the American College of Rheumatology.
  • 14 individuals attended a "brown bag lunch" on holistic health and lupus, at no cost to them.
  • 40 patients were connected to lupus services and resources through health fairs alone.
  • Joined over a dozen independent lupus groups across the country to lobby Congress under the Lupus Research Institute National Coalition umbrella to successfully advocate for sustained and increased research funding.
  • Hundreds attended support groups across northern California. At the LFNC office alone, the Young Adult support group "The Hangout" hosted 11 meetings.
  • Began a new Teen support group on lupus.
  • Helped train 60 front-line medical professionals throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to watch for signs when patients complain of symptoms that may be indicative of lupus under a pilot project by the Lupus Research Institute.
  • Brought together more than 700 runners, walkers, vendors and community members at the 5K Run & Walk for Lupus - northern California's largest lupus awareness event.
  • Reached and inspired over 1,000 people on social media, thanks to one of our most involved patient-volunteers who took over the reins this year for social media.
  • Been recognized as a top health nonprofit by Great Nonprofits for the fourth straight year.
  • Recognized outstanding contributions to the lupus community for the second year through our Purple Ribbon Awards.
  • Did all of this with administrative overhead of less than 10%.
Our goal in 2016 is to build on these achievements and expand on them. But we need your help to do that. Your donation is our lifeblood - we cannot continue to do this without you, and that is not merely a line we throw into our fundraising emails. You can count on us to stay focused on the lupus community, and we are counting on you to join us so that our community can not just survive, but thrive. Please donate by using the button below.
