Understanding the Health Insurance Needs of Lupus-affected Californians

Under the Affordable Care Act, California's state health insurance marketplace, Covered California, is now in its third year. In order to assist in our advocacy goals, we are looking to better understand how our patients gain coverage. Please help us by completing the following anonymous survey.

Make the Lupus Buddy Program Catch Fire

The Lupus Buddy Program - the first of its kind in lupus - is not even a month old (we launched it on July 15), and we already have almost 50 people signed up! Now that's something.

The interest in the program launched by the LFNC working with a volunteer coordinator tells us how valuable patients are finding it - not just in northern California but across the country. And although we couldn't be happier to see it take off among patients, one thing is holding us back from much broader outreach, recruitment and expansion: Funding.

You can solve that problem. Give just $25 (more if you can), then share our funding page with all your friends on your social networks. Donate now.

We started with a small seed funding from GSK, but we need to raise $10,000 more to help lupus patients from sea to shining sea. Why? We need time from program coordinators to match the patients, for orientation, for follow-up, for helping each pair of buddies at every stage. Give now, share and make it catch fire.

If you are a patient interested in the program, learn more, and sign up here. A program coordinator will be in touch with you. Any personal and medical information necessary to make the matches are treated with the highest degree of confidentiality.

Canadian Research Points to Increased Risk and Earlier Detection of Autism to Children Born to SLE Patients

A new study by Canadian researchers have found that children born to mothers with a diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (or SLE) are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with autism and that the diagnosis is likely to happen earlier in a child's life. The risk still remains minimal, however, with 1.4% for children born to those with SLE, and 0.6% to children born to those without.

Among children whose mothers had lupus, 1.4% were given a diagnosis of autism compared with 0.6% of control children, according to Sasha Bernatsky, MD, PhD, of McGill University in Montreal, and colleagues. [...]

The age at the time of autism diagnosis was younger for children whose mothers had lupus, at 3.8 years compared with 5.7 years for controls.

Researchers also noted, however, that anti-malarial and immunosuppressive medications do not seem to account for this discrepancy, and children with an autism diagnosis are not found to have been exposed to either kind of drugs even if the mother was on those medications during pregnancy.

Although this study adds to the growing body of research on lupus and pregnancy, researchers admit certain limitations, including possible other variables and limited understanding of how precisely auto-antibodies affect pregnancy. LFNC presents this study in order to keep you informed, and we remind you that planned pregnancy for patients with lupus under the care of a physician continues to be considered safe. Our newsletters are not meant to be medical advice, and you should only make decisions regarding pregnancy and your treatment in consultation with your medical team.
