Make the Lupus Buddy Program Catch Fire
The Lupus Buddy Program - the first of its kind in lupus - is not even a month old (we launched it on July 15), and we already have almost 50 people signed up! Now that's something.
The interest in the program launched by the LFNC working with a volunteer coordinator tells us how valuable patients are finding it - not just in northern California but across the country. And although we couldn't be happier to see it take off among patients, one thing is holding us back from much broader outreach, recruitment and expansion: Funding.
You can solve that problem. Give just $25 (more if you can), then share our funding page with all your friends on your social networks. Donate now.
We started with a small seed funding from GSK, but we need to raise $10,000 more to help lupus patients from sea to shining sea. Why? We need time from program coordinators to match the patients, for orientation, for follow-up, for helping each pair of buddies at every stage. Give now, share and make it catch fire.
If you are a patient interested in the program, learn more, and sign up here. A program coordinator will be in touch with you. Any personal and medical information necessary to make the matches are treated with the highest degree of confidentiality.

Study Links Biomarkers to Neonatal Cardiac Lupus
Given that some 90% of lupus patients are women and that diagnoses are primarily made in child-bearing years, pregnancy is a constant and important topic among lupus patients. The research community in turn is constantly attempting to better understand any possible risks to fetuses. While pregnancy continues to be considered generally safe for patients who plan and act in accordance with medical advice, neonatal lupus - lupus induced in utero - still carries a great deal of questions to the medical community.
To that end, a research team at the New York University led by Prof. Amit Saxena, MD has made important progress by linking certain biomarkers (for mothers) to neonatal cardiac lupus.
Biomarkers of inflammation, fibrosis, and cardiac dysfunction were associated with the development of cardiac neonatal lupus and also correlated with disease severity, analysis of data from the Research Registry for Neonatal Lupus suggested.
The study suggests, however, that the presence of these biomarkers may not be enough to predict neonatal cardiac lupus, and that it's fetal reactions to disease activity associated with these markers that propel the development of cardiac lupus in utero. Full details of the study is available here.
The findings underscore the importance of managing disease activity and planning with your medical team as you prepare to welcome a new addition to your family. The Lupus Foundation presents this and other studies to empower patients with timely and key information, and we remind readers that family planning, disease management and risk management should only be done in consultation with your medical care team.
