LFNC's Mid-Year Online Auction is LIVE: Bid and Win While Helping Fund Lupus Programs

This is LFNC's first mid-year auction, but that doesn't mean we are novices at this. The mid-year auction has items ranging from the lupus pin to a hot air balloon ride, from movie tickets to VIP access to Hollywood and everything in between. The auction kicked off on Wednesday, April 15, and you can view it here.

While you are deciding on what to bid on, keep in mind that the proceeds from these sales will go directly to funding LFNC's programs focused on the northern California lupus community.

LFNC Urges Immediate Patient Access to Treatments, Calls for End to "Fail First"

At its April meeting, members of the Board of Directors of the LFNC unanimously approved a statement of policy calling for an end to "fail first" treatment requirements often imposed by insurance plans and urged for no-red-tape patient access to FDA-approved treatments.

What is "fail first"? Some insurance plans refuse to pay for treatments or medications doctors think are necessary for a patient simply because they consider it too expensive. Instead, they require the patient to try up to 5 less expensive treatments and only when those fail will they approve treatment the patient needs.

Not only do these policies unduly interfere with the doctor-patient relationship, they often delay critical and necessary treatments for patients who can least afford to wait.

The LFNC has joined forces with patient advocates throughout California in support of AB 374, a bill introduced by California State Assemblymember Adrian Nazarian that would stop the application of the "fail first" policies to patients whose physicians determine that it's medically inappropriate.

Meet LFNC's New Class of Patient Instructors

Our patient education classes are among the most important of LFNC's programs. These classes help newly diagnosed and other patients understand the disease in their own terms, learn how to cope with it in their daily lives, and how to best use their medical care and support teams to live with lupus. We are proud to announce that this past weekend we concluded the training of six new patient education instructors - all volunteers from our community - with standardized material approved by the American College of Rheumatology. Our new educators are pictured above.
