Correction
In last week's e-newsletter, we referred to lupus nephritis as a kidney infection. Lupus nephritis is in fact not an infection. It is 'inflammation' (of the kidneys), although some lupus patients MAY develop unirnary tract or kidney infection.

Our apologies for the mistake, and our sincere thanks to Dr. Patrick Carroll for the correction.
Advocacy Works: Congress Listens to Lupus Research Advocates in Funding Bill

Last week, Congress passed continuing appropriations to fund the government through the end of Fiscal Year 2015 (ending September 30, 2015). Of interest to the lupus community, the bill appropriates an additional $2 million to fund the Lupus Initiative, the highly successful national healthcare provider education program conceived by the Lupus Research Institute, LFNC's national research partner, in collaboration with the federal government. Congress also increases funding for the nation's biomedical research program by $150 million, allotting $30.084 billion to the National Institutes of Health budget. In addition, Congress has ensured that Department of Defense's medical research program continues to include lupus. President Obama has indicated that he will sign the legislation.

The funding bill has big victories for lupus advocates, as the issues above were exactly what LFNC and other partners of the Lupus Research Institute National coalition advocated for when our representatives visited Capitol Hill in March to meet with legislators. We are thankful to Congress and the President for working together to fund critical priorities for lupus patients, and we ask the community to continue to work to be advocates.

Year-End Giving
As 2014 comes to a close, we are excited about what we have accomplished this year, and we are looking forward to the new year with anticipation. As you bring your year to a close, please consider making a tax-deductible gift to the Lupus Foundation of Northern California so that we can continue to make progress for the lupus community here in northern California, and through our advocacy efforts, nationwide.

Here are a few ways to give:
However you choose to give, we will thank you for any gift above $250 with a commemorative ornament (example pictured above). But every penny counts, and no gift is too small. Thank you for opening your hearts to us.
