"Women's Disease": NIH Grant to Expand on Novel Research Funded by Lupus Research Institute
It is a well known fact that lupus is 9 times as prevalent among women as it is among men. Researchers have been at a loss as to why, however - perhaps until now. An oncologist may have almost stumbled onto the answer while researching ovarian cancer. Cancer Therapy & Research Center oncologist and immunologist Tyler Curiel, M.D., M.P.H. received a research grant from the Lupus Research Institute to investigate the link between estrogen and the immune system. That research has lead to a new grant from the National Institutes of Health in the amount of $1.12 Million.
That groundwork has led to a $1.12 million federal grant to figure out the precise set of hormone signals that allow estrogen to interfere with the body's healthy immune function, and could lead to an important breakthrough in lupus treatment. The grant is through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program of the Department of Defense.
Finding this link can provide us the answer as to why lupus is so much more common among women, what estrogen's effect is on the immune system, and perhaps even a better treatment regimen.
