In the Black: LFNC Releases Annual Report Showing Financial Comeback, New Programs

Each year, after the end of our Fiscal Year, which runs from July to June, LFNC releases its Annual Report. The Annual Report is a summary of the year past, as well as a way for the community to glance at the impact they have made through LFNC throughout a fiscal year. This year's highlights:

  • For the first time in 3 years, LFNC has finished in the black, meaning that thanks to your generosity and the fiscal responsibility practiced by the staff and Board, we ended the year on solid financial footing.
  • Administrative overhead took up less than 7% of the budget, meaning that over 93% of the dollars you raised went straight to programs, community outreach, client and volunteer services, and fund development to keep these programs going.
  • New annual traditions: The Purple Ribbon Awards in January and the Leadership Training in May were successful, and will become a yearly affair here at the LFNC.
Along with it, we continued our patient and community centric programs such as the highly effective patient education classes, professional medical conferences, health fairs, and volunteer outreach.

Without further ado, you can read the Annual Report here. If you would like a printed  copy of the report, please call us at 408-954-8600. Members in good standing may obtain a copy free of charge; non-members may obtain a copy for a nominal shipping and handling fee of $5.

LFNC Financials, compiled by an external audit firm, will be available on the our web site after the October board meeting of the LFNC board of directors.
Research Links Vitamin D Deficiency with Cardiovasular Disease in Lupus

Once again, Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with cardiovascular disease in lupus patients. A new study published in Lupus Science and Medicine highlights this link and emphasizes the importance of maintaining healthy Vitamin D levels for lupus patients.

"Vitamin D deficiency has emerged as a potential risk factor for CVD. In epidemiological studies of the general population, lower vitamin D levels have been associated with CVD, hypertension, diabetes, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and surrogate measurements of cardiovascular risk such as coronary artery calcification and carotid intima medial thickness," [Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital/Case Medical Center in Cleveland Lead Researcher Dr. Angela Byun] Robinson and colleagues wrote.

Given the association of Vitamin D deficiency with cardiovascular problems even in the general population, it is even more important for patients with autoimmune illnesses to adhere to a healthy, balanced diet rich in vitamins.
