WE NEED YOUR HELP!

In the last three years, LFNC has been honored with the GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Award, based on feedback from clients, volunteers and supporters who gave favorable reviews regarding their experience with the organization.

We are again hoping for the Award for 2014.  Being named to this small circle of outstanding nonprofits helps create more exposure for LFNC and generates funding and support from foundations and other philanthropic organizations.

Please help us achieve this honor again this year by answering a few questions on the review site for LFNC.  Clicking  HERE will take you to the review site. It just takes a few minutes. We thank you in advance!

One Girl's Case Brightens Hope for Finding Genetic Origin of Lupus

For some time now, scientists have known that there is at least a genetic component to lupus - or perhaps to be more accurate, genetic components to lupus. But the question of exactly what those components are have eluded researchers.

Some researchers in Australia took a different path. Rather than trying to identify common genetic factors in a large number of patients, they focused on one 10-year-old girl with lupus, and last week they announced that they have found that genetic factor - for this particular patient.

Scientists from the Australian National University (ANU) have been able to identify the genetic cause of lupus in a specific individual for the first time.

ANU lead researcher, Dr Julia Ellyard, said scientists have used personalised medicine to identify the cause of the autoimmune disease in a 10-year-old girl. [...]

"Using DNA sequencing, the approach we've taken, we've been able to identify the specific cause of this child's disease," Dr Ellyard told 666 ABC Canberra.

"[It is an] increased amount of a particular molecule, called interferon-alpha, being produced."

Though this is one specific case, Dr. Ellyard pointed out that treatments for lupus triggered by that specific factor are already in clinical trials.

"We're hoping that now this girl can have specialised treatment using anti-interferon therapies, which are currently in clinical trials," she said.

"Now we are able to tailor treatment for her disease."

Rather than one or one set of umbrella genetic factors, individual lupus patients with specific types of lupus may well have specified genetic factors triggering their disease. This case seems to indicate that, and if true, it opens the door to individualized genetic factor targeting for lupus patients and thus more specific treatments.

Lupus UK Gets on Nephritis' Case
This week just seems to be dedicated to international lupus research and organizations. Just as Australian researchers look to open up a new horizon in lupus treatment through individual genetic targeting and treatment, Lupus UK has published a timely informational booklet for lupus of the kidney, or Lupus Nephritis. The booklet describes the functions of the kidney, the nature of lupus in general and Lupus Nephritis specifically, as well as its diagnosis and treatment.

Lupus UK also discusses best practices such as keeping blood pressure under control, staying on a healthy and balanced diet, and preventing infections.

The LFNC thanks Lupus UK for the publication of this booklet, and encourages our readers to review the entire publication. As always, the best treatment and lifestyle decisions are made in consultation with your physician and medical care team.
