WE NEED YOUR HELP!

In the last three years, LFNC has been honored with the GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Award, based on feedback from clients, volunteers and supporters who gave favorable reviews regarding their experience with the organization.

We are again hoping for the Award for 2014.  Being named to this small circle of outstanding nonprofits helps create more exposure for LFNC and generates funding and support from foundations and other philanthropic organizations.

Please help us achieve this honor again this year by answering a few questions on the review site for LFNC.  Clicking  HERE will take you to the review site. It just takes a few minutes. We thank you in advance!

New Study Links Low Vitamin D Levels to Increased Heart Disease in Lupus

Our latest semi-annual digital newsletter featured the topic of heart disease in lupus. So today's focus comes as a timely addition: a new research study by a team at Chicago's Northwestern University has found that lupus patients with a low Vitamin D level may be at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease activity.

According to results published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research, patients with the highest levels of 25(OH)D [which is a key and one of the most reliable tests for Vitamin D levels] were less likely to experience hypertension and hyperlipidaemia, as well as being more likely to have lower SLE disease activity scores and C-reactive protein levels - a key biomarker for inflammation - at baseline.

Given the importance of a balanced and proper diet as part of one's disease management when it comes to lupus, the study shouldn't come as a surprise. Vitamins are an essential part of a healthy diet. The National Institutes of Health notes Vitamin D's role in regulating and modulating the immune system as well as the effects of Vitamin D deficiency on autoimmune activity.

Besides a vitamin supplement, choosing your foods carefully can be crucial for one's Vitamin D intake. WebMD has a list of foods rich in Vitamin D and calcium. As always, however, LFNC provides these data for information purposes only, and not as medical advice. It is always best to obtain key advice on diet from a licensed nutritionist, your physician, and/or other members of your medicare care team.
The Summer NewSLEtter is Here!

We've heard you! In the past year, we have heard from numerous members of our community saying that they miss our print newsletter. Guess what, we missed it too. So although we had to stop printing it en masse due to a loss of funding that provided us the ability to hire a designer and a professional printer, we have decided to hack it in-house!

Ready to read it already? Click here for the online magazine format, or here to download a printable version (PDF).

The content is top notch, just like you have always come to know and expect, and we're even introducing interactive content. We have designed and published it in-house, and we hope you will be pleased with our new effort.

The Summer 2014 issue, headlined "The Heart of Lupus", features articles ranging in subject from cardiovascular disease in lupus to exciting new lupus drug trials to a detailed discussion of the immune system and updates on LFNC's activities.

LFNC members in good standing may request a printed copy of the Newsletter free of charge by calling the office at 408-954-8600 or sending us an email at executive@lfnc.org. If you aren't a member, here's your chance to become one!
