What did we learn at the conference this weekend?
Dr. Maria Dall'Era delivers the keynote session to LFNC's Lupus Treatment and Research update.

On Saturday, attendees at our Lupus Treatment and Research Update conference in San Rafael had the opportunity to hear Dr. Maria Dall'Era of UCSF, one of the country's foremost experts on lupus and the head of the California Lupus Surveillance Project.

Attendees - patients, loved ones and professionals alike - learned about the preliminary results of the California Lupus Surveillance Project, such as the confirmed prevalence of lupus disproportionately among women of color. Dr. Dall'Era also spoke about ongoing clinical trials of drugs already in the market for other ailments showing promise for lupus patients. As insurance companies are increasingly denying off-label use, these trials are becoming all the more critical.

LFNC will soon publish a full update as well as Dr. Dall'Era's presentation (as available) on our website.

In addition to Dr. Dall'Era's update and discussion, the conference also heard a presentation from our Executive Director, Rene Astudillo, about the importance and methods of advocacy, as part of our ongoing cooperation with the Lupus Research Institute.

LFNC thanks, Amgen, the Lupus Research Institute and Questcor Pharmaceuticals for their support in making this conference possible.
Acthar clinical trials - a drug approved for lupus in 1950s looks to make a comeback
Acthar, a drug approved by the FDA before the current standards of clinical trials were in place, is looking to make a comeback with modern clinical trials. In three separate clinical trials, Acthar is being tested to treat moderate as well as severe active SLE, as well as for its efficacy with lupus nephritis, or lupus of the kidney. One trial for its use in moderate to severe SLE concluded in July 2013, and the community is awaiting the publication of the results.

Acthar is part of the many drugs currently on the market being tested for its lupus efficacy, but it has the distinction of having already been approved for lupus generally a half century ago, which as an injective, did not take off in the market back then.

Disclaimer: The LFNC does not endorse specific medication. The only way to know which drug may be effective for you is in consultation with your physician. Questcor, a sponsor of LFNC's conference on July 12, 2014, owns the rights to Acthar.
