For patients in remission, stopping immunosuppressants may be possible
It has long been conventional wisdom that lupus patients have to be on constant or increasing dosages of immunosuppressants for the rest of their lives. That conventional wisdom may be about to change.
A new study presented at the European League Against Rheumatism Annual Congress (EULAR 2014) showed that, for the majority of lupus patients who are in remission, it is possible to successfully stop immunosuppressant therapy without triggering a flare of their disease. Within two years, it was possible to stop the immunosuppressant in about 70% of clinically stable patients. Half were successful within three years, and this proportion remained stable for up to five years.
Dr. Zahi Touma, lead author of the study, expressed optimism that this study may provide the best guideline yet on how, when, and whether to stop immunosuppressants for lupus patients who are in stable condition. The study also noted that patients who taper off the use of immunosuppressants over a longer period of time are at a lower risk of flare-ups than those who taper off faster.
As always, please consult your team of caregivers, including your rheumatologist, about your specific treatment, and always follow your doctor's advice.

It was Colleen and Joe Brown this year. Will it be you next year?
When she got the call, Colleen Brown was ecstatic about winning the grand prize in this year's Mercedes drawing. Colleen, who recalls purchasing her tickets at the 5K only after getting on the phone with her husband Joe, recounts almost losing her lucky charm bracelet (a gift from her sister) at the event, until a volunteer at the event found and returned it to her. Needless to say, she felt lucky. And not for no reason, either! Check out Colleen, Joe, and daughter Kira picking up their brand new Mercedes just last week!
Colleen and Joe have supported the Lupus Foundation for the past 15 years.
Do you want to join the Browns in the list of our winners? Because we know you do, we have opened up next year's drawing early, and you can already buy tickets!
The tickets are only $75, but you can get three (3) for $200 and five (5) for $300. Buy early, and you will be eligible for two incredible early bird prizes - a shopping spree and a cruise - in addition to the 2015 Mercedes!
To buy your tickets, fill out the form, or call the office at 408-954-8600. And keep your lucky charm bracelet handy!
