Newly diagnosed patients at higher risk for stroke: study
In a study just out, Canadian scientists have found that newly diagnosed lupus patients may be up to 7-and-a-half times higher risk for strokes.

Researchers recommended that SLE patients - especially newly diagnosed ones - have a physician who not only understands lupus but can effectively manage other risk factors for stroke such as high blood pressure, smoking, etc.

team of researchers in Canada has found a 7.4-fold higher risk for an incident stroke in the first year after diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) compared with healthy controls, in a population-based study. [...]

Antonio Avina-Zubieta, MD, PhD, the British Columbia Lupus Society Scholar, said the spike in stroke risk immediately after diagnosis "is a new finding-to the best of my knowledge, nobody has reported this." His team also uncovered a 2.7-fold overall higher risk for stroke in people with SLE and a sixfold elevated risk for stroke in patients under the age of 45 years. This should put physicians on high alert for cerebrovascular symptoms in lupus patients, especially younger or newly diagnosed individuals, he noted.

Although it is known that newly diagnosed lupus patients often suffer from stress, anxiety, and depression, not to mention side effects of steroids and other prescription drugs that may increase the risk of cardiovascular stroke, but this is the first scientific study of its kind to quantify the higher risk factor.
